Vier Jungs aus den Niederlanden, alle mit komplett unterschiedlichen Hintergründen, tun sich zusammen und kreieren eine mitreißende Mischung aus Britpop und Surfrock. Das sind The Vices. Nach ihrem erfolgreichen Debüt-Album Looking For Faces aus dem letzten Jahr, hat die Band in diesem Jahr mit “Strange Again“ und “Tomorrow I’ll Be” schon zwei neue Singles veröffentlicht und auch eine neue EP angekündigt. Bevor diese erscheint hat uns die Kapelle aber erst einmal diese My-Soundtrack-Folge zusammengestellt.
John Lee Hooker – Boom Boom
As a kid I often rode with my Dad to our family in the south of the Netherlands. Those trips often lasted 3 hours, and during them my Dad would show me a lot of music. I always one rock and roll CD which interested me, and this was the first time I felt the magic of music. I was in the car, heard that raw rock and its energy, didn’t understand what was happening but felt it was amazing.

Als Kind bin ich oft mit meinem Vater zu unserer Familie in den Süden der Niederlande gefahren. Diese Fahrten dauerten oft drei Stunden und mein Vater zeigte mir dabei viel Musik. Ich habe immer eine Rock’n’Roll-CD dabei, die mich interessiert hat, und das war das erste Mal, dass ich die Magie der Musik gespürt habe. Ich war im Auto, hörte diesen rohen Rock und seine Energie, verstand nicht, was passierte, aber ich fand es erstaunlich.
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Under the Bridge
The Chili Peppers are a band who nearly died so many times, literallly. Their collective friendship kept them together and – to an extent – saved them. When I was 10 I saw the documentary A Dutch Connection, which left a huge impression. I understood more about the magic of music and why it did something to me. Experiencing life with your best friends in fun and horrible ways, and then allowing it to come together in songs. I think it’s amazing! Under the Bridge is a perfect example of this.
Die Chili Peppers sind eine Band, die so oft buchstäblich fast gestorben wäre. Ihre kollektive Freundschaft hielt sie zusammen und rettete sie bis zu einem gewissen Grad. Als ich 10 war, sah ich den Dokumentarfilm “A Dutch Connection”, der einen großen Eindruck hinterließ. Ich verstand mehr über die Magie der Musik und warum sie etwas mit mir machte. Erlebe as Leben mit deinen besten Freunden auf lustige und schreckliche Weise und lass es dann in Liedern zusammenkommen. Ich finde es erstaunlich! “Under the Bridge” ist ein perfektes Beispiel dafür.
The Velvet Underground – Pale Blue Eyes
Pale Blue Eyes taught me that making music is simply about if you can get something across, and how you do it. I think Lou Reed is an amazing singer, but not because he’s technically skilled or brilliant. What he sings on this song – and how he does it – is so powerful. It’s fragile, pure and honest; it comes from the heart. Every time I listen to this song I automatically stop what I’m doing and listen closely. The song’s honesty demands your attention and draws you in. I attach great value to the lessons Lou Reed has taught me.
“Pale Blue Eyes” hat mir beigebracht, dass es beim Musikmachen einfach darum geht, ob man etwas rüberbringen kann und wie man es macht. Ich denke, Lou Reed ist ein großartiger Sänger, aber nicht, weil er technisch versiert oder brillant ist. Was er auf diesem Song singt – und wie er es tut – ist so kraftvoll. Es ist zerbrechlich, rein und ehrlich; es kommt von Herzen. Jedes Mal, wenn ich dieses Lied höre, höre ich automatisch mit dem auf, was ich gerade tue, und höre genau hin. Die Ehrlichkeit des Songs fordert Aufmerksamkeit und zieht einen in ihren Bann. Ich lege großen Wert auf die Lektionen, die Lou Reed mir beigebracht hat.
The Growlers – Empty Bones
This song was my first introduction to a special musical rhythm. I’d never listened to ska or reggae before but in Empty Bones, The Growlers use a reggae rhythm in an almost gypsy-like manner. It gives the song a dark edge, something bittersweet. The pleasure and the sadness are both clear to see. This contrasts appeals to me.
Dieses Lied war meine erste Begegnung mit einem besonderen musikalischen Rhythmus. Ich hatte vorher noch nie Ska oder Reggae gehört, aber in “Empty Bones” verwenden The Growlers einen Reggae-Rhythmus auf eine fast gypsy-artige Art und Weise. Es verleiht dem Song eine dunkle Kante, etwas Bittersüßes. Die Freude und die Traurigkeit sind beide deutlich wahrnehmbar. Diese Kontraste sprechen mich an.
Jimi Hendrix – Little Wing
Of course, Hendrix! I discovered Jimi via John Frusciante. He plays in a totally different way to all the straight up rock and roll which I knew at the time. It was guitar music, and it was raw – just like rock and roll – but there was a totally different vibe and feel to it. It opened my eyes to a whole new way of playing guitar.
Natürlich, Hendrix! Ich habe Jimi über John Frusciante entdeckt. Er spielt auf eine ganz andere Art und Weise als all der geradlinige Rock’n’Roll, den ich damals kannte. Es war Gitarrenmusik, und sie war roh – genau wie Rock and Roll – aber es hatte eine völlig andere Stimmung und ein ganz anderes Gefühl. Es hat mir die Augen für eine ganz neue Art des Gitarrenspiels geöffnet.
