Wo kam denn die Inspiration her?

Was macht diesen Song bei Wrestling-Fans so populär?

Music for the Eater of Worlds

What is your opinion on wrestling?

Mark: It’s great fun and a real art-form I think. I hadn’t really watched wrestling much since I was a kid but lately I have found myself getting more and more drawn into that whole world. I really enjoyed the Bray Wyatt vs Chris Jericho showdown that was on NXT a few weeks back.

How did the collaboration with WWE began?

Mark: My song was picked from a music library in New York. I think it was Bray Wyatt himself who chose it. He started using it last year and it proved so popular and so well-suited to the character that the WWE told me they wanted to keep it as his permanent theme. I was delighted of course! Now it’s all over YouTube and you can buy it on iTunes. I’m thrilled that people like it so much. I heard about it back in June last year from a guy online who asked me if I had a song called ‘Broken Out In Love.’ I said yes but I didn’t think this could be the same song… I was quite surprised when I learned about it.

Do you like how it is presented now?

Mark: Yeah, I think it’s great! I never in a million years would have ever even thought about the song being picked as a wrestling theme but… I love it! I think Bray Wyatt is a really interesting character. He’s creepy as hell but could easily become the kind of anti-hero figure that people love.

What do you remember about writing the song?

Mark: I’m from the UK, though I live in the States now, and I wrote and recorded it one evening about six years ago when I lived in a crumbling old house in the country a few miles outside of Oxford. It was one of those songs that almost wrote itself. I really didn’t spend that much time working on it. Some of the tracks are literally the first take. I’d never even played slide guitar before trying it on this song. But that is perhaps what makes it work. It’s one of those songs that I don’t think I could re-record. If I tried to clean it up and play in ‘better’ it would probably totally kill the feel of it.

Where did you get the inspiration from?

Mark: Probably a combination of influences… At that time I’d been playing rhythm guitar with The Jesus and Mary Chain for a few months and I was listening to their songs a lot. One thing that struck me was how they tended to write a lot of songs using the traditional 1,4,5 chord progression and yet they were all so cool and so catchy. I wanted to try using that progression because I’d never really done it before. I also wanted to add a bit of a Radiohead vibe. I wasn’t really thinking about it all that much but I do remember having those two bands in mind when I wrote the song. The lyrics just kind of came naturally from the mood of the song. I knew it was a bit swampy and disconcerting and the words match that mood. Quite a few people have asked me what the song’s about and… well, I suppose it’s about obsession. The kind of obsessive feeling you have for someone that you’ve fallen for that almost destroys you. It’s the idea that love sometimes can seem like a disease.

What is it that makes the song so popular among WWE fans in your opinion?

Mark: You know, I’m really not sure! I do think that it totally fits Bray Wyatt’s character though I can’t say why. I think it’s a pretty catchy song in a not very obvious way… if that makes sense. It’s got a certain ‘classic’ element to it – like it could have been written in any era. Really… I dunno… I’m just very happy that people like it.

Which effects had the success of the theme song for your career?

Mark: Well… it’s had a pretty big impact already. It’s gained me a lot of new fans and lead to increased interest in my other work like last year’s Mark Crozer and The Rels album… I’ve seen that the song has been uploaded to YouTube something like 40 or 50 times and between them those videos have had a few hundred thousand views which is crazy but great! It’s really opening doors for me and I’m very grateful for that.

What can we expect of you next?

Mark: I just put out a full-length album last year – Mark Crozer and The Rels – but will most likely release something new later this year. It might not be another full album but there will probably be an EP of 5 or 6 songs at least. And of course I want to perform Bray Wyatt’s theme live at a WWE event at some point. That would be a lot of fun.
