Yola ist hierzulande noch ein Geheimtipp. Am 22. Februar wird die Britin mit „Walk Through Fire“ ihr Debütalbum veröffentlichen – produziert von Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys). Vorher stand sie uns noch für unsere My-Soundtrack-Reihe zur Verfügung.
Diverse Blogs und Medien feiern die Gute bereits als Königin des Country-Soul. Hat was, zumal Yola auch ganz andere Seiten kennengelernt hat: Die Musikerin aus Bristol wuchs in Armut und mit Eltern auf, die ihr jegliches Musizieren strikt untersagten. Später wurde sie obdachlos, lebte auf den Straßen Londons und erlitt zudem eine stressbedingte Stimmlosigkeit.Als erfolgreiche Songwriterin für andere Künstler schrieb sich Yola aus ihrer Misere, war zwischenzeitlich Mitglied bei Massive Attack – und legt nun solo los.

Sheryl Crow – A Change Would Do You Good
This song stuck out to me as a little girl. The southern states aesthetic was one I’d heard but not in this context. I think it was my first step towards Americana as a genre, without me knowing it.
Als ich ein Kind war, stach dieser Song für mich heraus. Diese Südstaaten-Ästhetik kannte ich zwar, aber nicht in diesem Kontext. Das war wohl meine erste Berührung mit dem Americana-Genre, ohne dass ich es wusste.
PJ Harvey & John Parish – Un Cercle Autour du Soleil
I got into this album at a real Emo stage of my life. Everything was so damn dramatic in my mind and I felt I didn’t have the right to express it. This song was all that tension bound up in a song to me.
Ich fand zu diesem Album, als ich mich gerade in einer richtigen Emo-Phase befand. Alles war in meinem Kopf so verdammt dramatisch und ich hatte das Gefühl, nicht das Recht zu haben, das auch auszudrücken. Diese ganze Anspannung hat sich in diesem Song für mich gebündelt.
Björk – Jóga
And straight to another Emo stage of my life but this time it was one a freedom. Björk as a creative entity was the pinnacle of freedom of expression. This song is steeped in tears of joy a heavy nostalgia for me.
Und direkt weiter zu meiner nächsten Emo-Phase. Aber diesmal ging es um Freiheit. Björk als kreative Instanz war so etwas wie der Gipfel der Freiheit im Ausdruck für mich. Dieser Song ist für mich mit nostalgiebedingten Freudentränen getränkt.
CSN – Do For The Others
As a kid I remember going to friends house near where I live now in Bristol and sitting on the floor of the conservatory and hearing this harmony heaving music. I think her name was Kat or Alex, her dad wouldn’t let anyone but her touch the records. I was switched on when I heard this music and every time I heard it again it cut deeper into my soul. I love harmony!
Ich weiß noch, wie ich als Kind immer zum Haus eines Kumpels ging, hier in der Nähe von Bristol. Ich saß da auf dem Boden und hörte diese von Harmonien getragene Musik. Ich glaube, ihr Name war Kat oder Alex, und ihr Dad ließ niemanden außer ihr seine Schallplatten anrühren. Ich war direkt wie angeknipst, als ich diese Musik hörte. Und jedes Mal, wenn ich den Song erneut hörte, schnitt er tiefer in meine Seele. Ich liebe Harmonien.
Joni Mitchell – Big Yellow Taxi
I remember the first time I heard Joni Mitchell. That west coast singer songwriter sound was something that stays with me to this day. She was so prolific and such an important writer, I wanted to emulate that. Some school friends of mine were into the whole west coast thing, so i was lucky to hear a lot of this kinda music early in my teens. She wrote about so many things from social issues, to life & love and all with such an empathetic and progressive voice.
Ich erinnere mich noch, als ich das erste Mal Joni Mitchell hörte. Dieser Westcoast-Singer-Songwriter-Sound blieb bis heute bei mir haften. Sie war so produktiv und solch eine wichtige Songschreiberin. Dem wollte ich nacheifern. Viele meiner Schulfreunde hörten dieses Westküsten-Ding auch gerne, und so kam ich mit viel davon in meinen Teenie-Jahren in Berührung. Joni schrieb über so viele Dinge, angefangen von sozialen Problemen, über Leben bis hin zu Liebe – und das alles mit einer solch emphatischen, progressiven Stimme.
