SYML – hinter diesem mysteriösen Projektnamen verbirgt sich der Produzent, Programmierer, Sound-Engineer, Gitarrist und Percussionist und Pianist Brian Fennell. Der Künstlername ist walisisch, wird „simml” ausgesprochen und steht für „simpel”. Warum walisisch? Nun, der US-Amerikaner ist adoptiert und hat irgendwann erfahren, dass seine leiblichen Eltern walisisch waren. Unter diesem Alias also hat der Gute, einst Teil der Indie-Rock-Band Barcelona, 2019 sein Solo-Debütalbum veröffentlicht. Gerade hat der Mann mit „DIM“ eine neue EP vorgelegt. Für ihn eine „Verlust-Verarbeitung”, in den fünf Songs erkundet er die Formen der Trauer. In der Single „Stay Close“ etwa geht es um die Krebserkrankung seines Vaters. Und stand Fennell nun für unsere My-Soundtrack-Reihe zur Verfügung.

Jeff is my favorite artist by far. The combination of his voice, guitar playing, and overall mystery is beautiful and tragic. This song sums up those things for me. The dynamic range in this song is perfect. The story it tells is classic, and no one will ever tell it like he did.

Jeff ist bei weitem mein Lieblingskünstler. Die Kombination aus Stimme, Gitarrenspiel und Mysterium ist wunderschön und tragisch. Dieses Lied fasst diese Dinge für mich zusammen. Der Dynamikumfang in diesem Song ist perfekt. Die Geschichte, die er erzählt, ist klassisch, und niemand wird sie jemals so erzählen wie er.
Nina Simone – Lilac Wine
This one is actually connected to my Jeff Buckley selection because he covers it on Grace. I have to thank him for turning me on to Nina’s music. What a life she lived!? Her voice is not from this world. What’s crazy is that this song has been covered by a bunch of people. Nina was like the 4th artist to cover it back in the 60s. A song is extra special when an artist covers it and you believe they wrote it from their soul.
Dieser Song hier ist eigentlich mit meiner Jeff Buckley-Auswahl verbunden, weil er ihn auf „Grace“ covert. Ich muss ihm dafür danken, dass er mich auf Ninas Musik aufmerksam gemacht hat. Was für ein Leben sie gelebt hat!? Ihre Stimme ist nicht von dieser Welt. Das Verrückte ist, dass dieses Lied von einer Menge Leute gecovert wurde. Nina war wohl die vierte Künstlerin, die es in den 60er Jahren coverte. Ein Song ist etwas ganz Besonderes, wenn ein Künstler ihn covert und man glaubt, dass er ihn aus seiner Seele heraus geschrieben hat.
Tom Petty – You Don’t Know How It Feels
This is one the best examples of a pop song I can think of. Every line is a hook. It’s simple. The production doesn’t overthink itself. Super clean.
Das beste Beispiel eines Pop-Songs, das mir in den Sinn kommt. Jede Zeile ein Hook. Ganz einfach. Die Produktion ist nicht zu versponnen. Ganz clean.
Bill Withers – Grandma’s Hands
Besides being sampled famously by Backstreet in the 90s, this song uses repetition in a very touching way. It immediately puts you in the room with this very special woman, which speaks to the strength of his writing. You can also sing along after hearing it one time.
Dieses Lied wurde in den 90ern von Backstreet ganz berühmt gesampelt. Es verwendet Wiederholungen auf sehr berührende Weise. Dabei versetzt es einen sofort in den Raum mit dieser ganz besonderen Frau, was die Stärke seines Schreibens unterstreicht. Man kann auch mitsingen, nachdem man es einmal gehört hat.
Bon Iver – Blindsided
This song came to me in a formative time. I know he wrote it secluded away in the woods somewhere, and it feels like that. It helped me sit with myself and be still in a time when I needed that. It’s a very heart wrenching song.
Dieses Lied begegnete mir in einer prägenden Zeit. Ich weiß, dass er es irgendwo im Wald geschrieben hat, und es fühlt sich auch so an. Es half mir, ganz bei mir zu sein und in einer Zeit ruhig zu sein, in der ich das brauchte. Es ist ein sehr herzzerreißendes Lied.

This song is like a lullaby and a hymn. The lyrics are pretty epic, but the delivery is simple and consistent.
