Von Wexford nach Leipzig: The Ocelots stammen eigentlich aus Irland, sind aber mittlerweile in Deutschland beheimatet. Jetzt haben die Zwillingsbrüder Ashley und Brandon Watson mit „Everything, When Said Slowly“ eine neue Platte vorgelegt. Eine Platte, die sich durch Unvollkommenheit, Stilbrüche und Tempowechsel auszeichnet und das bisher ambitionierteste Werk des Indie-Folk-Duos darstellt. Die Watsons verhandeln hier Themen wie irische Migration, das Wahrnehmen von Zeit, Liebe und, nun ja, Fahrräder. Reinhören lohnt sich – und reinlesen. Und zwar in diese My-Soundtrack-Folge, die wir mit den Twins auf die Beine gestellt haben.

I found this track while watching the movie „Happy Together“ by Won Kar Wai, and it was the first time in a long time I had to pause a movie because I liked the song so much. I found this performance and left the movie till another day and just watched this on repeat. The way he uses his falsetto really brings me to tears. This is a huge influence for me in terms of vocal delivery and string arrangements.

Ich habe diesen Track entdeckt, als ich den Film „Happy Together“ von Won Kar Wai sah. Es war das erste Mal seit Langem, dass ich einen Film pausieren musste, weil mir ein Lied so gut gefiel. Ich fand diese Performance, verschob den Film auf einen anderen Tag und sah ihn mir die Szene einfach in Dauerschleife an. Der Falsett-Einsatz rührt mich zu Tränen. Das hat mich in Bezug auf Gesang und Streicherarrangements stark beeinflusst.
O Terno – Pegando Leve
We flew over to Portugal especially to see this band perform and both of us left feeling like we had an extreme amount of work to do as musicians and performers. Their musicality is never at any instance deterred by their throwback 70’s aesthetic, and they are cool without ever being pretentious or superficial, and that even in life is very hard to achieve.

Mapache – Me Voy Pa’l Pueblo
Mapache are a duo from California that both sing and play guitar like they started in another lifetime, and are a big favourite for both of us. They cover old Mariachi songs and give them a whole new breath of life, and their arrangements with harmony are particularly engaging and memorable.
Mapache ist ein Duo aus Kalifornien, das singt und Gitarre spielt, als hätte es das schon mal in einem anderen Leben gemacht. Wir beide lieben sie sehr. Sie covern alte Mariachi-Lieder und hauchen ihnen neues Leben ein. Ihre Arrangements mit Harmonien sind besonders einprägsam.
The Lemon Twigs – Corner Of My Eye
I saw The Lemon Twigs play in Berlin, and I danced like crazy for 90 minutes straight. Brian D’Addario has an incredible voice, and their album „Everything Harmony“ is a big win for any fans of The Kinks and The Beach Boys.

Simon & Garfunkel – Overs
As a duo, we are constantly compared to Simon and Garfunkel, and it gets kind of annoying. But then I remember that Simon and Garfunkel are really great. I even learned how to harmonise listening to their music. Usually with old 60’s harmony duo’s like them, their voices are hard-panned left and right, so you can take out one earphone and just have Paul. I used to sing along to one earphone at a time and teach my brain what harmonies I could sing along to with each of their songs. It’s a great trick.
Als Duo werden wir ständig mit Simon und Garfunkel verglichen, und das nervt irgendwie. Aber dann erinnere ich mich daran, dass Simon und Garfunkel wirklich großartig sind. Ich habe sogar gelernt, ihre Musik zu harmonisieren. Normalerweise sind die Stimmen von Harmonieduos aus den 60ern wie ihnen stark nach links und rechts gepannt, sodass man einen Kopfhörer herausnehmen und nur Paul hören kann. Ich habe immer nur mit einem Kopfhörer mitgesungen und meinem Gehirn so beigebracht, welche Harmonien ich bei jedem ihrer Songs mitsingen konnte. Das ist ein toller Trick.
Lomelda – Hannah Happiest
Lomeldas „Hannah Happiest“ is the perfect comfort song, one of those songs you want a 24 hour version of. I could live in this song and be Brandon Happiest. The mix is perfect. The song is both simple and complex, uplifting and melancholic, and lies on that perfect in-between line where I start to feel something from music.

Die Mischung ist perfekt. Der Song ist einfach und komplex zugleich, erhebend und melancholisch und liegt genau auf dieser perfekten Zwischenebene, bei der ich anfange, etwas von der Musik zu spüren.
