My Soundtrack: Luis (L.A.)

The Beatles – Girl

From, probably my favorite Beatles album “Rubber Soul”. Without any doubt one of my oldest memories with music involved. I remember so clearly sitting in front of my dad’s portable turntable playing the record again and again and crying with “Michelle” and “Girl”. Later as a singer I’ve never had the conviction to play any Beatle song, a mixture of respect and fear, but one day I was invited to participate on a Beatles Tribute Show in a beautiful theatre here in Madrid and I played “Girl” and it was like a magical experience, almost like a exorcism for me. I’ll never forget that for the rest of my life.

Ryan Adams – La Cienega Just Smiled

Ryan change the course of my life. And it was with this song and “I See Monsters” that he played live in a Summer festival in 2004 when I totally fell in love with the way he works, how he plays, how he write songs and how he perform them live. By that time I was just “the drummer” for  3 or 4 bands at the same time, and was right that day when I realized that I wanted something else, grab a guitar and sing, and take out all those feelings I had inside of me.

Sade – Sweetest Taboo

Oh man, that voice, those melodies… I really don’t know how many times I heard that song on the radio when I was a kid… thousands of times! My mom use to have a radio on on every room of the house, we lived in a two story house with a huge garden, and still now she’s got a radio on everywhere! When we were kids, my sister and I playing outside and singing what now are 80’s classics like Cyndi Lauper, Phil Collins, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet  or Sade… Many years after I realized that all that music is still in my head, and obviously in my songs.

Pearl Jam – Rearviewmirror

My sister introduced me to all the grunge scene, she is 2 years older than me, and in 1991, 92 she became a Nirvana fan and that was a total blast at home because she opened the door to a new dimension for me… Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Alice in Chains and then Blind Melon, Soul Asylum and of course.. Pearl Jam who played the most important role in my life as a “fan” of a band after The Beatles. That was like I DISCOVERED THOSE GUYS and I love them until the end! I remember watching “Rearviewmirror” live on Saturday Night Live on the MTV and felt my head exploding in a million pieces!

Tom Petty – Crawling Back To You

I remember my friend Carlos dad playing me „Wildflowers“, just released at that time, it was 1994 I guess, and asking me… do you know who’s this? and I was like… mmmmm sounds like George Harrison, but it’s not, and he was like “you know what kid? I just discovered you one of your future favorite artists” and he was right, 100% right… I became a huge fan of all the Petty stuff, with and without the Heartbreakers. And specially this song and this record are top notch for me. Many years later I recorded one of my records at that same studio with that same piano that Elton John bought one day because he wanted a grand piano in the studio… Life’s crazy and beautiful sometimes.
