My Soundtrack: Katie Stelmanis (Austra)

Giacomo Puccini – Che Gilda Manina

When I was a kid I performed in „La Boheme“ with the Canadian Opera Company and I remember sitting backstage and hearing this song every night. I thought it was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’d ever heard and proceeded to listen to it every night all through high school on my diskman while falling asleep.

Massive Attack – Unfinished Sympathy

I recently saw Massive attack play for the first time, and it was also actually my first time listening to their music. We played a small festival together in Belgium and shared a backstage area in an elementary school, we each had our own classroom. I was so in love with their set I bought all their records and decided this one is my favourite.

I didn’t start listening to Bjork till I had already graduated high school and was working in a coffee shop where they would play it all the time. It took me a while to get into it but eventually I became so enamoured with her music that every note was like a moonbeam that I needed to capture. Aurora is my favourite song, I think because of the female choir.

Steve „Silk“ Hurley – Jack Your Body

I feel like I’m late to discover a lot of things, I only got into house music and club music for that matter about 5 years ago when the first austra record came out. This was the song that got me into it, and that influenced the second record Olympia so heavily.

I spent a lot of time in Mexico writing „Future Politics“ and while I was there I was introduced to Electrocumbia. I remember being in a taxi with my friend and her putting on Chancha Via Circuito. I asked her what it was and assumed it was something from a few decades ago, but when I looked it up myself I realized he’s a young producer from argentina re-working a lot of traditional latin American folk songs. He is one of many producers doing this, and I find it incredibly beautiful and subversive at the same time.
