Eigentlich, ja, eigentlich sollten Gengahr ja gar nicht Gengahr heißen. Das 2013 in Hackney gegründete Indie-Rock-Quartett hatte sich ursprünglich den Namen “RES” rausgepickt, allerdings war der schon an einen Künstler vergeben, wie sie via iTunes herausfanden. Also: Gengahr, in Anlehnung an Gengar, ein früheres Pokémon. Gerade haben die Jungs mit “Sanctuary” ihr drittes Album vorgelegt. Auf Tour gehen sie – aus bekannten Gründen – damit vorerst nicht, aber dafür blieb Zeit für unsere My-Soundtrack-Reihe.
Nick Drake – Pink Moon
This song reminds me of family holidays in Cornwall as a child. Driving down to the beach, the salty air and the sun trying it’s best to break through the clouds. My love for melancholy music started here listening to Nick Drake, John Martin and Joni Mitchell in the back of my dad’s car.

Big Thief – Shark Smile
This is one of my favourite songs of the last few years. It reminds me of all the music I fell in love with as a child. It’s overloaded with emotion and takes you on a heartfelt journey that you never want to end.
Einer meiner Lieblingssongs aus den vergangenen paar Jahren. Er erinnert mich an die Art von Musik, in die ich mich als Kind verliebte. Er ist so mit Emotionen überladen und nimmt dich mit auf eine mit dem Herzen fühlbare Reise, von der man will, dass sie niemals endet.
Lou Reed – Satellite Of Love
I could have picked any song off this album. It was a record that I became obsessed with as a teenager beginning to write my own songs. I love Bowie’s production on this album and his backing vocals are so friendly and encouraging that it’s impossible not to smile when you put this on.
Ich hätte eigentlich jeden Song aus diesem Album wählen können. Von dieser Platte war ich als Teenager regelrecht besessen, als ich gerade meine eigenen Songs zu schreiben begann. Ich mag Bowies Produktion auf diesem Album. Die Backing Vocals sind so freundlich und ermutigend, dass man nicht umhin kommt, zu lächeln, wenn man es auflegt.
CAN – Vitamin C
This is the sort of thing we will often have on in the dressing room before we go out and play. I love how triumphant the drums are on this track I feel like it’s the track we reference most in studio when we start looking for a drum sound.
Solche Sachen hören wir ganz gerne im Umkleidebereich, bevor wir rausgehen und spielen. Ich mag es, wie triumphal sich die Drums auf diesem Track anfühlen und wahrscheinlich ist der Track auch unsere Hauptreferenz, wenn es im Studio darum geht, wie ein Drum-Sound klingen soll.
UMO – So Good At Being In Trouble
This song came to me at an important time as a musician. I felt bored of contemporary indie guitar music and this felt like a breath of fresh air. The song writing is excellent but I think the production was the thing that really excited me. There is brilliant atmosphere across this album and it added a new focus to my own music making before forming Gengahr.
Der Song ist mir als Musiker zu einem sehr wichtigen Zeitpunkt begegnet. Ich war damals von zeitgenössischer Gitarrenmusik gelangweilt und da fühlte sich dieser Track an wie eine frische Brise. Das Songwriting ist exzellent, aber es war vor allem die Produktion, die mich begeistert hat. Das ganze Album hat eine brillante Atmosphäre und es schuf einen neuen Fokus für meine eigene Musik, bevor ich dann Gengahr gründete.
