Tracy Chapman – Talking About a Revolution
I love Tracy. I listened to her debut album a lot when I was a kid. Her voice sounded so sad but also soothing to me. I didn’t even know if Tracy was a woman or a man back then. I just listened to her when I couldn’t sleep. Later on, when I was able to understand her lyrics, her songs impressed me even more, talking about all the challenges she had to face as a poor black woman. It’s the kind of transparency and honesty in songwriting that I admire a lot. And her voice tells you that everything is going to be alright, even when everything is going wrong.

Ich liebe Tracy. Als Kind habe ich ihr Debütalbum oft gehört. Ihre Stimme klang für mich dabei immer so traurig, aber auch beruhigend. Ich wusste damals nicht einmal, ob Tracy eine Frau oder ein Mann war. Ich habe ihr nur zugehört, wenn ich nicht schlafen konnte. Später, als ich ihre Texte dann verstehen konnte, beeindruckten mich ihre Lieder noch mehr. Sie erzählten von all den Herausforderungen, denen sie sich als arme schwarze Frau stellen musste. Es ist die Art von Transparenz und Ehrlichkeit beim Songwriting, die ich sehr bewundere. Und ihre Stimme sagt dir, dass alles gut wird, auch wenn alles schief geht.
Annie Lennox – Why
To me, this track is pure beauty. The melody, the lyrics, the vocal delivery, it’s just perfect. A timeless classic. My mum used to listen to Annie Lennox, and she gave me a tape of the album “Diva”. I still love that album deeply. Annie has so much style and depth. When you listen to her you feel like she owns all the wisdom in the world, but she’s also cool, artistic and brave. A female icon I will always admire.
Für mich ist dieser Track pure Schönheit. Die Melodie, der Text, der Gesang, es ist einfach perfekt. Ein zeitloser Klassiker. Meine Mutter hat Annie Lennox immer gehört und sie hat mir eine Kassette des Albums „Diva“ geschenkt. Ich liebe diese Platte immer noch sehr. Annie hat so viel Stil und Tiefe. Wenn man ihr zuhört, hat man das Gefühl, dass sie alle Weisheit der Welt besitzt, aber sie ist auch cool, künstlerisch und mutig. Eine weibliche Ikone, die ich immer bewundern werde.
Ane Brun – One of Your Songs
I realise my mum has influenced me a lot with her musical taste. She introduced me to Tracy, Annie and later on to Ane Brun. We had one really cool independent record shop in the village we lived in, and my mum would go there and the guy from the store would recommend new music to her. One day she came home with the album “Spending Time With Morgan”. I immediately loved Ane’s voice. I also really like the sparse and DIY production on this album. This song is also on that album. It’s so clean and simple, but there’s something hauntingly beautiful to it too. I always kept following Ane. She is an artist that keeps reinventing herself. She is wise, cool, independent, ageless. It’s good to have these women as roles model for other (young) female artists. She shows that you don’t have to go with the hype, but just do what you love with dignity and grace.
Mir ist klar, dass mich meine Mutter mit ihrem Musikgeschmack sehr beeinflusst hat. Sie stellte mir schließlich Tracy, Annie und später Ane Brun vor. Wir hatten einen wirklich coolen unabhängigen Plattenladen in dem Dorf, in dem wir lebten, und meine Mutter ging dorthin und der Typ aus dem Laden empfahl ihr dann neue Musik. Eines Tages kam sie mit dem Album „Spending Time With Morgan“ nach Hause. Ich habe Anes Stimme sofort geliebt. Ich mag auch die spärliche DIY-Produktion auf diesem Album sehr. Dieses Lied ist auch auf dieser Platt. Es ist so sauber und einfach, aber es hat auch etwas eindringlich Schönes. Ich bin Ane immer gefolgt. Sie ist eine Künstlerin, die sich immer wieder neu erfindet. Sie ist weise, cool, unabhängig, zeitlos. Es ist gut, diese Frauen als Vorbilder für andere (junge) Künstlerinnen zu haben. Sie zeigt, dass man dem Hype nicht folgen muss, sondern mit Würde und Anmut das tut, was man liebt.
John Mayer – Stop This Train
Not many people might know that I’m a big John Mayer fan. I know the lyrics from all of his songs by heart. When I studied at the Rock Academie (Dutch Conservatory for pop music) one of my classmates who was a guitar player spread a copied disk of “Room for Squares”, Johns debut album. I really liked his songs immediately, his catchy hooks, his plain and honest lyrics. From that moment on, I listened to every one of his albums. This song is from “Continuum”, what still might be one of his best albums to date. But I also loved his Country side that he showed more of after this album. I’m always looking for a certain kind of classiness in a song. Well, this song has classiness written all over it. Simply beautiful.
Nicht viele Leute wissen vielleicht, dass ich ein großer John Mayer-Fan bin. Aber ich kenne die Texte aller seiner Lieder auswendig. Als ich an der Rock Academie (niederländisches Konservatorium für Popmusik) studierte, verbreitete einer meiner Klassenkameraden, der Gitarrist war, eine kopierte Diskette von „Room for Squares“, Johns Debütalbum. Ich mochte seine Songs auf Anhieb, seine eingängigen Hooks, seine schlichten und ehrlichen Texte. Von diesem Moment an hörte ich jedes seiner Alben. Dieser Song stammt von „Continuum“, was immer noch eines seiner besten Alben sein könnte. Aber ich mochte auch seine Country-Seite, von der er nach dieser Platte mehr zeigte. Ich suche immer nach einer gewissen Klasse in einem Song. Nun, dieses Lied hat sie. Einfach schön.
Sufjan Stevens – Chicago
To me this song breathes life, movement, freedom. If I have a life anthem, it might be this song, but I’d also wanna hear it on my funeral. ‘All things go, all things go’, isn’t that comforting and saddening at the same time? The production of the song, with the strings, the horns, the choir, the drums, it’s just the full circus but everything perfectly balanced. Sometimes less is more, sometimes more is more. Sufjan flourishes in both. Big love for Sufjan.
Für mich atmet dieses Lied Leben, Bewegung, Freiheit. Wenn ich eine Lebenshymne habe, könnte es dieses Lied sein, aber ich würde es auch auf meiner Beerdigung hören wollen. „All things go, all things go“, ist das nicht tröstlich und traurig zugleich? Die Produktion des Songs, mit den Streichern, den Hörnern, dem Chor, dem Schlagzeug. Es ist der volle Zirkus, aber alles perfekt ausbalanciert. Manchmal ist weniger mehr, manchmal ist mehr mehr. Sufjan blüht in beiden auf. Große Liebe für Sufjan.
