My Soundtrack: Keith Murray (We Are Scientists)

The Velvet Underground – I Found A Reason

The Velvet Underground are maybe my platonic ideal, as a band – they’re scuzzy and poppy and sweet but too cool to be *very* sweet, all at the same time. This song is simultaneously lovely and gritty – the harmonies are beautiful but all sung slightly out of key by people without particularly pleasant voices. Similarly, the lyrics are kind of romantic but also pretty dark and weirdly dismissive. An excellent balance.

Weezer – Buddy Holly

There may not be a song that’s more straight-up *fun* in the American songbook, for my money. It’s kind of dumb, but expertly crafted – short and sweet and full of crunchy guitars that just plow all the way through. I love the vulnerable lyrics couched in this effervescent rock song. It’s also got an extremely dopey and delightful guitar solo, with maybe the perfect band drop-out, before that last chorus.  It just DELIVERS.

Player – Baby Come Back

Man, this song is groovy as hell and has killer, arpeggiated keys and all that jazz, but it really only exists for those harmonies on the chorus. I spend pretty much all of my time as a songwriter looking for chances to deploy thick layers of vocal harmonies, and this song may have been the first one to infect me with that desperate need.

Marilyn Manson – Dope Hat

This song appears on Marilyn Manson’s debut album, „Portrait Of An American Family“, but the superior version is the one on their cassette release from a few years before that, The Family Jams. The song is spooky and grating and just generally discomforting,  but it’s also just a great singalong. I love a song that begins with a clunky, notey riff and then really pounds into the chorus.  Lots of great wah-wah work in this song, too.  It’s the kind of song that was fun to play along to before I could actually play guitar very well.

The Dismemberment Plan – What Do You Want Me To Say

This may have been the song that really taught me that you could be weird and irritating and unconventional but still anchor the whole thing with a killer, knockout, anthemic hook. What a psychotic verse, and what a gratifying chorus!  This is the way to be arty without forfeiting the chance to also please the hell out of your audience.
