Caetano Veloso – O Leaozinho
I’ve long been fascinated by Caetano Veloso. His body of work is so diverse and impressive, there’s really no one else like him. I don’t know what he’s singing about in this song, but it’s such a beautiful melody, I don’t really want to know for fear it might change the imagery it invokes in my mind. This is the kind of song that makes me feel like everything will be ok.

Ich bin schon lange von Caetano Veloso fasziniert. Sein Katalog ist so vielfältig und eindrucksvoll. Er ist wirklich einzigartig. Ich weiß nicht, worüber er in diesem Song singt, aber er hat solch eine schöne Melodie, daher will ich es auch gar nicht wissen. Das könnte sonst meine Vorstellung, die sich in meinem Kopf aufgebaut hat, zerstören. Songs wie dieser geben mir das Gefühl, dass alles schon in Ordnung kommt.
Jolie Holland – Mexico City
I first heard Jolie Holland around 2003 when a friend came over and played me her first album. What I heard was a rare voice and songwriting talent that has influenced me ever since. Her voice is like a fluttering bird: unpredictable, fragile, and completely assured, and her songs are full of beautiful lyrics.

Was ich hörte, war eine Stimme, wie sie nur selten vorkommt, und ein Songwriting-Talent, das mich seither beeinflusst hat. Ihre Stimme ist wie ein flatternder Vogel: unvorhersehbar, fragil, und natürlich sind ihre Songs voller wunderbarer Lyrics.
Mickey Newbury – An American Trilogy
I can clearly remember putting Mickey Newbury’s album „Frisco Mabel Joy“ on for the first time, lying on a couch in the living room of the old apartment my wife and I shared near downtown Winnipeg. Mesmerizing from beginning to end, this records has remained very special to me. The first song, „An American Trilogy“, is one of the most powerful and moving songs I can think of. His voice is so pure and honest, it never fails to break my heart somehow.
Ich weiß noch, wie ich erstmals Mickey Newburys Album „Frisco Mabel Joy“ auflegte. Ich lag auf der Couch im Wohnzimmer meines alten Apartments, das meine Frau und ich in der Innenstadt Winnipegs teilten. Das Ding ist vom Anfang bis zum Ende hypnotisch, daher ist die Platte immer noch sehr besonders für mich. Der erste Song, „An American Trilogy“, ist einer der kraftvollsten und bewegendsten Songs, die ich mir vorstellen kann. Seine Stimme ist so rein und ehrlich, sie bricht mir immer wieder das Herz.
Velvet Underground – I Found a Reason
Well, there’s not much that needs to be said about this band. If I had to pick a favourite song of theirs, it would be this one. This is soul music done only as the Velvet Underground could. I think there are elements of soul music that underly a lot of the songs I write. I admire how the VU can go straight at a genre and still make it completely their own. I love everything about this song.
Es gibt kaum etwas, dass man über diese Band noch sagen muss. Wenn ich meinen Lieblingssong wählen müsste, wäre es dieser. So klingt Soul-Musik, wenn sie von Velvet Underground kommt. Auch in meinen Songs steckt unterschwellig viel Soul. Ich bewundere, wie Velvet Underground sich in einem Genre versuchen und es komplett zu ihrem eigenen machen. Ich liebe alles an diesem Song.
Dan Reeder – Maybe
I heard this song once and knew I had to learn it immediately. This is the kind of song that I strive to write. It takes a rare gift to be able to capture the full complexity of a topic and distill it into a handful of beautifully digestible verses. This song just about says it all.
Ich hörte diesen Song erstmals und wusste sofort, dass ich ihn lernen musste. So einen Song möchte ich auch schreiben. Es ist eine seltene Gabe, die ganze Komplexität eines Themas einzufangen und sie in ein paar schön verdauliche Verse zu destillieren. Dieser Song sagt alles aus.
