Es ist fast ein Bandgründungsklassiker: Vier junge Menschen treffen sich an der Uni. Der Ort des Geschehens war in diesem Fall das Royal Collage of Music in Stockholm. Unsere vier Protagonist*innen studierten Jazz, spielten auch außerhalb der Vorlesungen zusammen. Erst haben sich zwei von ihnen zu einem Duo zusammengefunden, irgendwann wurde das Duo zum Quartett und aus Covern eigene Songs. Girl Scout haben in ihrer kurzen Bandgeschichte schon ordentlich von sich reden gemacht, vor allem durch ihre fabelhaften Liveshows in Großbritannien und Skandinavien 2022. Im Herbst erschien endlich auch offiziell die Debütsingle. Nun haben uns Emma Jansson (guitar, vocals), Evelina Arvidsson Eklind (bass, vocals), Per Lindberg (drums) und Viktor Spasov (guitar) für unsere My-Soundtrack-Reihe Rede und Antwort gestanden.
Seventeen Going Under – Sam Fender
Emma: My brother showed me this song when it came out and it has been stuck in my head ever since. This tune screams instant classic, it sounds like a song that’s always been around.

The lyrics are very specific to Sam’s upbringing in North Shields yet it still resonates so profoundly. You can really feel the emotional weight it carries, the struggles of growing up and being pulled in every direction and trying to live up to other people’s expectations. Every time I hear it I want to scream along to every word.

Masterpiece!
Mein Bruder hat mir dieses Lied gezeigt, als es herauskam, und seitdem ist es mir im Kopf geblieben. Diese Melodie schreit sofort: Klassiker. Sie klingt wie ein Lied, das es schon immer gegeben hat.
Die Lyrics stehen sehr spezifisch für Sams Erziehung in North Shields und dennoch kann man sich mit ihnen identifizieren. Man kann das emotionale Gewicht, das sie tragen, wirklich spüren, die Kämpfe des Erwachsenwerdens, das in alle Richtungen gezerrt werden und den Versuch, die Erwartungen anderer Menschen zu erfüllen. Jedes Mal, wenn ich es höre, möchte ich bei jedem Wort mitschreien.

Like a Lady – Pom Poko
Emma: This song is a nuclear explosion. It’s a roller coaster pendulating between a sparse groove and Ragnhild’s siren-like vocals and then these insane distorted guitars just come out of left field and split your head open and it’s fucking awesome. Can’t get enough. I wish I wrote this!!!
Dieses Lied ist eine nukleare Explosion. Es ist eine Achterbahnfahrt, die zwischen einem spärlichen Groove und Ragnhilds sirenenartigem Gesang pendelt, und dann kommen diese wahnsinnig verzerrten Gitarren einfach aus dem linken Feld und spalten dir den Kopf und es ist verdammt großartig. Kann nicht genug bekommen. Ich wünschte, ich hätte das geschrieben!!!
Mary – Big Thief
Per: I was introduced to Big Thief some four or five years ago through this album, which still probably is my favorite of theirs. I could pick any song from it but this is the one that got me absolutely hooked in the first place. Whereas the rest of the album is guitar driven and pretty rough and rowdy, in the best way possible, this one with its slow pace and sparse arrangement stands out. Adrianne Lenker is such an amazing songwriter and this song really showcases that. It’s just a really beautiful song. It feels like a well needed rest, like a big exhale.
Ich bin vor etwa vier oder fünf Jahren durch dieses Album auf Big Thief aufmerksam geworden. Es ist wahrscheinlich immer noch mein Favorit von ihnen. Ich könnte jeden Song daraus auswählen, aber dieser hat mich von Anfang an absolut süchtig gemacht. Während der Rest des Albums gitarrengetrieben und ziemlich rau und rauflustig ist, sticht dieses hier mit seinem langsamen Tempo und spärlichen Arrangement auf die bestmögliche Weise hervor. Adrianne Lenker ist eine so erstaunliche Songwriterin und dieser Song zeigt das wirklich. Einfach ein sehr schönes Lied. Es fühlt sich an wie eine dringend benötigte Pause, wie ein tiefes Ausatmen.
Baby Britain – Elliott Smith
Viktor: Baby Britain is the time when Elliott Smith most plainly channeled the Beatles (I think?). It tip toes between the sunny vibe of Beatlesque encouragement and Elliotts own sorrows, a bit of American depression on top of British cheerfulness. Although the lyrics might be about alcoholism and misery, the song always makes me happy and filled with energy, because Smiths love for music, songwriting and arrangements shines through. It’s like he’s this poetic melancholic dark lord but at the same time a kid playing around with his favorite toys and absolutely enjoying the moment. Also, the song has a reference to Revolver, which makes everything even more interesting. Thank you Elliott!
“Baby Britain” ist die Zeit, in der Elliott Smith die Beatles am deutlichsten gechannelt hat (glaube ich?). Die Nummer bewegt sich auf Zehenspitzen zwischen dem sonnigen Vibe einer beatlesque Aufmunterung und Elliotts eigenen Sorgen. Ein bisschen amerikanischer Depression plus britische Fröhlichkeit. Auch wenn der Text von Alkoholismus und Elend handeln mag, macht mich der Song immer fröhlich und bringt mir Energie, denn Smiths Liebe für Musik, Songwriting und Arrangements scheint hier durch. Es ist, als wäre er so ein poetischer, melancholischer dunkler Lord, aber gleichzeitig ein Kind, das mit seinen Lieblingsspielzeugen herumspielt und den Moment absolut genießt. Außerdem hat der Song einen Bezug zu “Revolver”, was alles noch interessanter macht. Danke Elliott!

Evelina: One of my favorite songs of all time. A perfect indie movie soundtrack, making me wanna cry every time I hear it. The soft emotional vocals with the warm guitar is like a hug from someone you love, and then the strings on top of that!!! Just amazing.
Einer meiner Lieblingssongs aller Zeiten. Ein perfekter Indie-Film-Soundtrack, der mich jedes Mal zum Weinen bringt, wenn ich ihn höre. Der sanfte, emotionale Gesang mit der warmen Gitarre ist wie eine Umarmung von jemandem, den man liebt, und dann noch die Streicher dazu!!!! Einfach unglaublich.
