My Soundtrack: The Day

Peter Gabriel – The Book of Love

I remember when the two of us started playing live as a duo back then, we usually would end our show with this song played only with Laura singing and me on electric bass with a Boss Loop Station. We found out that it’s a cover but in terms of harmony our version related more to Peter Gabriel’s version which we really love. To me this song is a bit like a Wes Anderson movie. It is wise in such a simple, almost childish way, that it does not get cheesy.

Kurt Elling – Minuano

This one goes also back to the very beginning of our band. When Laura and me first met at the conservatory in Arnhem in the Netherlands, for one course every singer had to form a duo with a musician of their choice and I was lucky that Laura asked me. This song was one of the very first we played together. It’s a composition by Pat Metheny, who we both really like and Laura introduced me to this vocal version by Kurt Elling. We came up with our own arrangement of this with only bass and vocals. And at that time we started already to drown the bass guitar in reverb but kept the vocals very clean, because we were so impressed by Kurt Elling’s interpretation. Today I would be very curios to listen back to our version of this song.

Amatorski – The King

Laura and me stood in a Dutch record shop, randomly looking through CDs and vinyl and then suddenly this song was played through the speakers. We both looked at each other and you could tell it was this moment when you fall in love with a song literally rightaway. We both went to the counter to ask for the title and the band, and the guy introduced us to this great band Amatorski from Belgium and sold his last two copies of their EP – which was just out at that time – to each one of us. I guess, everyone knows these moments and the joy of discovering a great new song and listening to it constantly. Fingers crossed that it happens to you again as soon as possible!

Helgi Jonsson – Aurora

Laura introduced me to this song and since then we both try to attend every show we can by Helgi Jonsson. Once we were both at his show at Studio 672 in Cologne and it was one of that special nights where all the different elements (the sound, your personal mood, choice of songs etc.) go together so perfectly that it’s so beautiful that you need to cry your heart out the whole show. It was that perfect. When we played that venue ourselves a little later, we told the audience about Helgi Jonsson’s show in that same room and how it moved us. And after the show when we stood at our merchandise a guy came to us and told us that he liked our show and the fact that we mentioned Helgi because he is a friend of his and he will tell him about it. We didn’t hear from neither of them since then :) but still we loved this coincidence!

I was a Sigur Rós fan since I first discovered them on Viva II when they had their first record out, at the time where you still had good music television in Germany. Since then I would go to every show I could. I think I got Laura convinced when their record „Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust“ came out and I remember Laura stating „wow! what is THIS?“ after she heard „Ára bátur“. And I absolutely agree. It is really hard to describe or talk about it but in terms of trying to go somewhere „profound“ with your art or music I think Sigur Rós came somewhere very close to a „core“ of something with this performance here. And it is even caught on tape. (And I love the way the recording is clipping very shortly at one of the peaks at the climax proofing that the sound engineers also did not expect THIS and it seems as if the tape couldn’t cope with it neither).
