Die dänische Singer-Songwriterin Nanna Larsen hat mit “Downstream Livin'” gerade ihr drittes Album veröffentlicht. Durch das weht mehr als nur ein Hauch Americana. Eine weibliche Country-Band hatte die gute Nanna dazu inspiriert, sich mit dem Genre etwas näher zu beschäftigen. „Die Musikerinnen hatten abgetragene Hochzeitskleider und Cowboystiefel an, ihre Haare waren zu Braids geflochten und sie spielten mir unbekannte Country-Songs. Die Energie war beeindruckend und ich wollte auch so eine Band und so einen Sound haben.“ Welche Songs die Dänin in ihrem Leben sonst stark beeinflusst haben, das verrät sie uns in dieser My-Soundtrack-Folge.

The Eagles – Hotel California
At 15, my first vinyl record ever was “Hotel California”. I loved that song, and the whole record in fact. It had a cool and a bit dark vibe – kinda like my own teen years. It was one of the first songs I tried to learn playing on guitars at 16. It took years and years to be able to play all those chords and rhythm and sing to it :D But it motivated me to learn the guitar.
Meine erste LP überhaupt war “Hotel California”. Ich war damals 15 und liebte den Song, aber auch die ganze Platte. Sie hatte diesen coolen, düsteren Vibe. Wie meine Teenie-Jahre. Es war auch einer der ersten Songs, die ich auf Gitarre zu spielen versuchte. Es hat Jahre gedauert, ehe ich die ganzen Akkorde konnte, den Rhythmus drauf hatte und dazu singen konnte. Aber er hat mich dazu motiviert, Gitarre spielen zu lernen.
Tracy Chapman – Sorry
Then Tracy Chapman came. And knocked me over with her voice and songwriting. I love her. I saw her playing solo for 35.000 people on my first festival ever. It was so simple. Just her and the guitar – but it was larger than life. I wish I could write something so simple and beautiful like the song “Sorry”. I still wan’t to be Tracy Chapman :D
Und dann kam Tracy Chapman. Sie hat mich einfach umgehauen mit ihrer Stimme und ihrem Songwriting. Ich liebe sie. Ich hab sie auch mal live gesehen, vor 35.000 Leuten. Es war mein erstes Festival überhaupt. Es war so simpel. Nur sie und ihre Gitarre – aber sie war trotzdem larger than life. Ich wünschte, ich könnte so etwas Einfaches und Wunderschönes wie “Sorry” schreiben. Ich möchte immer noch Tracy Chapman sein.
Alanis Morissette – You Oughta Know
Alanis Morissette thought me that it was alright to express real emotions – even angry ones. “You oughta now” . That helped me tremendously. All my own anger and sorrow about growing up with an alcoholic dad, and my general identity crises, got an outlet through music. I could write sad angry songs. Thank god – so that now I also have the room for the loving, kind and fun songs :D
Alanis Morissette brachte mir bei, dass es okay war, seine wahren Gefühle auszudrücken – selbst wenn es sich dabei um Zorn handelt. “You oughta know”. Das hat mir wahnsinnig geholfen. Mein ganzer Ärger und meine ganzen Sorgen, die ich als Heranwachsende mit meinem alkoholkranken Vater hatte, meine ganze Identitätskrisen – all das fand durch die Musik plötzlich ein Ventil. Ich konnte traurige, wütende Songs schreiben. Gottseidank – denn so habe ich heute auch Raum für liebevolle, nette und lustige Songs.
Joni Mitchell – Both Sides Now
Much later, a song that changed me was discovering Joni Mitchells “Both Sides Now”. I must have heard it on repeat a 1000 times. The lyrics are outstanding, and she is out of this world as an artist and songwriter.
Viel später entdeckte ich einen Song, der mich verändern sollte: Joni Mitchells “Both Sides Now”. Ich muss ihn 1000 Mal auf Repeat gehört haben. Die Lyrics sind herausragend. Sie ist als Künstlerin und Songwriterin nicht von dieser Welt.
The Civil Wars – Barton Hollow
Latest inspiration for my newest album (among others) is The Civil Wars. I heard their song “Barton Hollow” and I knew I wanted to make music in that Americana genre. I was staying and touring in Nashville and Texas for a couple of months when I heard it. Before I was a little more Alternative Pop and Rock. Most of their songs are recorded with just a guitar and voices – but its so intense, and I’ve heard their Album “Barton Hollow” over and over again.
Eine meiner jüngsten Inspirationen bei der Arbeit an meinem neuen Album waren die Civil Wars. Ich hörte ihren Song “Barton Hollow” und wusste, dass ich mich im Americana-Genre ausprobieren wollte. Ich wohnte und tourte durch Nashville und Texas für ein paar Monate und hörte diesen Track. Davor war ich mehr in Richtung Alternative Pop und Rock unterwegs. Die meisten Songs dieser Band bestehen nur aus Gitarre und Vocals – aber sie sind so intensiv. Ich habe das Album “Barton Hollow” immer und immer wieder gehört.
