My Soundtrack: Matthew Murphy (Love Fame Tragedy)

Das Pandemie-Jahr 2020 hat Murphy nun genutzt, sein Solo-Debütalbum „Wherever I Go, I Want To Leave“zu veröffentlichen.

Miike Snow – Genghis Khan

For ‚Wherever I Go, I Want To Leave‘ I really wanted each song to have their own particular flow, without a ton of push and pull. Essentially for them to feel good from start to finish and not to diverge too much from the core elements that felt so good in the writing process. ‚Genghis Khan‘ is a great example of this as I feel I could listen to that piano hook for a week and not get bored.

Für „Wherever I Go, I Want To Leave“ wollte ich wirklich, dass jeder Song seinen eigenen Flow hat.

alt-J – Hunger Of The Pine

I love this band, like pretty much everyone else in the world. But one thing they do incredibly well, is the lead vocal. It sounds so close, personal and talkative. And there isn’t much doubling going on, which can make things feel a bit more ‚produced‘ or ‚robotic‘ on occasion. So the majority of the songs on the album (at least in the verses) only have one vocal which makes the lyrics feel that bit more honest and personal to me. of course having Gus from alt-J involved on a few of the songs was a major thrill too!

Inception Soundtrack (Hans Zimmer) – Dream Is Collapsing

Sometimes when I get a bit stuck on a song, either in the writing or recording process, my initial thought is that the problem is that it needs to go somewhere new. But in truth, a lot of the time, it just needs room to grow around what’s already in place. So movie soundtracks are a real go to in these situations and really helped the completion of songs like ‚5150‘ & ‚Brand New Brain‘.

Don Henley – Boys Of Summer

Was heavily influenced by this for one song in particular – ‚Everything Affects Me Now‘. Wanted to write something timeless, and that had a Californian vibe to it. Not sure it’s either of those. Ha! But I do think it’s a pretty great song, and having Joey Santiago twiddle all over it made it that bit cooler for me.

Bei einem Song wurde ich schwer von dieser Nummer beeinflusst: „Everything Affects Me Now“. Ich wollte unbedingt etwas Zeitloses schreiben. Etwas, das einen kalifornischen Vibe aufweist. Weiß jetzt nicht, ob das geklappt hat. Ha!

Elliott Smith – Kiwi Maddog 20/20

With ‚Wherever I Go, I Want To Leave‘ being a pretty lengthy debut album. I thought it needed some moments to breathe and allow the listener to relax for a bit, before bombarding them with another upbeat song. This instrumental off ‚Roman Candle‘ really does that, whilst also encapsulating the atmosphere of the album. This instrumental really offered the inspiration for ‚The Sea Is Deep And The World is Wide‘, which began as a tune I used to play on a ukulele to help get my daughter to sleep at night.

‚Wherever I Go, I Want To Leave‘ ist ein ziemlich langes Debütalbum.
