Nein, leicht hatten es Janice Prix in ihren Anfangstagen nicht. Die Band aus der kleinen schwedischen Industriestadt Trollhättan hatte mit ihrem gefühlvollen Indie-Pop in der von Metal und Punk geprägten Heimat einen schweren Stand. Sie war sogar öffentlichen Anfeindungen ausgesetzt. Die vier Schweden mussten so einige Opfer bringen, aber sie haben sich rausgekämpft. Mit Auftritten quer durch die schwedische Clubszene bis hin zur Berlin Music Week. Dort haben sie mit ihren Texte über Themen wie Liebe, Politik und Verlust für Aufsehen gesorgt. Gerade ist mit “Waking” eine neue Single der Schweden erschienen. Ein Song, geprägt von hymnischen Chören und teilweise aus der Sicht eines fiktiven Flüchtlings geschrieben. Uns hat die Gruppe nun für unsere My Soundtrack-Reihe Rede und Antwort gestanden.
Radiohead – 2+2=5
MK: This was the first Radiohead song I ever heard – a classmate said I had to listen to Radiohead, and it was love at first sight. This was maybe 13 years ago and I still love the song, and the band. It’s probably one of my top two bands, and I listen to at least two or three Radiohead records a week.

MK: Das war der erste Radiohead-Song, den ich je gehört hatte. Ein Klassenkamerad riet mir, mir die Band mal anzuhören – und es war Liebe auf den ersten Blick. Das war wohl vor etwa 13 Jahren und ich liebe den Song noch immer. Genau wie die Band, die ich wahrscheinlich auch zu meinen Top-Two-Bands zählen würde. Pro Woche höre ich mir sicherlich zwei bis drei Radiohead-Platten an.
Kate Bush – This Woman’s Work
Richard: Besides being a complete masterpiece I also believe this is the song that displays the million nuances of Kate’s voice the best. She’s always so convincing in everything she does. So in synch with the mood and soundscape of the song. I listen to her music every time I fail to be in sync with the mood of the songs I’m recording, just to get a blueprint of how shit is done. In a way Kate Bush has been my most present vocal coach.
Richard: Der Song ist nicht nur ein absolutes Meisterwerk, ich glaube, er zeigt auch die Millionen von Nuancen in Kates Stimme am besten auf. Sie ist immer so überzeugend in allem, was sie tut. So absolut eins mit der Stimmung und Klanglandschaft eines Songs. Ich höre ihre Platten immer dann, wenn ich mich selbst mal nicht synchron mit der Stimmung eines Liedes fühle, das ich gerade aufnehme. Einfach, um einen Blueprint zu haben, wie der Scheiß funktioniert. Kate Bush ist sozusagen meine meist frequentierte Gesanglehrerin.
Pat Metheny – The Way Up
MK: I’ve always liked bands that made big, cinematic and thought through records that had a theme, like a movie. In highschool I was very much into jazz and experimental improvisational music and in those days I really liked the jazz guitarist Pat Metheny and in particular I liked his song “The Way Up”, which is basically an hour long modern jazz composition. In retrospect, I find the production of it a bit slick but the composition and the overall theme of the record is still great. I also had the joy of seeing the whole record performed live once.
MK: Ich mochte schon immer solche Bands, die große, cinematographische und durchdachte Platten machten, die ein durchgängiges Thema haben. Wie ein Film eben. In der High School mochte ich Jazz und experimentelle, improvisierte Musik und in dieser Zeit vor allem den Jazz-Gitarristen Pat Metheny. Vor allem “The Way Up”, das im Grunde eine einstündige Modern-Jazz-Komposition ist. Rückblickend ist die Produktion ein bisschen slick, aber die Komposition und das ganze Thema der Platte sind immer noch großartig. Ich hatte mal die Freude, ihn live performen zu sehen.
Radiohead – Let Down
Victor: This was probably my first love affair with Radiohead, when I was into their guitar-driven era and before I got into their more experimental and electronic side. But this song have stayed with me. I’m a sucker for sad songs, and this is in my mind indeed one of the saddest. Great guitar work also.
Victor: Das war wohl meine erste Liebesaffäre mit Radiohead, als ich noch sehr ihre Gitarren-basierte Phase mochte, ehe ich ihre experimentellere und elektronische Seite entdeckte. Der Song hat sich bei mir aber festgesetzt. Ich liebe traurige Songs, und das ist meiner Meinung nach einer der traurigsten. Tolles Gitarrenspiel übrigens.
Pink Floyd – Us and them (Liveversion – the Pulse record)
MK: I’ve mostly listened to the 1994 live version of this song and I love it. I saw some documentary about the making of this song and I think David Gilmour said something about them wanting to do a song that included a lot of pauses and a general calmness, to reflect the busy nature of the then current state of music. I love that and I think modern music needs that.
MK: Ich habe mir immer vor allem die 1994er Live-Version dieses Songs reingezogen und liebe sie einfach. Ich hatte mal eine Doku über das Making-Of des Songs gesehen. In dieser sagte David Gilmour, dass die Band damals einen Song schaffen wollte, der viele Pausen haben und eine gewisse Ruhe ausstrahlen sollte. Um die geschäftige Natur der aktuellen Musik zu reflektieren. Ich liebe das und ich glaube, die moderne Musik braucht das.
