Eine kleine Supergroup: Ellen Kempner von Palehound und Melina Duterte von Jay Som haben mit Bachelor ein neues gemeinsames Projekt am Laufen. Es ist die logische Konsequenz einer Freundschaft, die 2017 begann, als sich Duterte und Kempner in einem Green Room in Sacramento erstmals trafen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren sie schon seit Jahren gegenseitige Fans, setzten die Songs des anderen auf ihre Playlists und durchsuchten YouTube nach Live-Videos. Nun machen sie also zusammen Mucke. Vorläufiger Höhepunkt: das Debüt-Album „Doomin‘ Sun“, das im vergangenen Jahr erschien. Reinhören lohnt. Ebenso wie in diese My-Soundtrack-Liste, die die beiden Songwriterinnen für uns aufgestellt haben.

The Go! Team – Thunder, Lightning, Strike (2004)
Melina: The first time I heard this record I was honestly confused but it introduced me to a whole new world of 2000’s music with the creative usage of samples from old 70s records to VHS recordings of cheerleaders. I was completely blown away by how dense each song was but it somehow captured this amazing energy and spirit. It’s also one of the most fun and happiest records I’ve heard and it taught me that music doesn’t always have to be so lyric/vocal focused.

Als ich diese Platte zum ersten Mal hörte, war ich ehrlich gesagt verwirrt, aber sie führte mich in eine ganz neue Welt der Musik der 2000er ein – mit dieser kreativen Verwendung von Samples von alten 70er-Platten bis hin zu VHS-Aufnahmen von Cheerleadern. Ich war völlig überwältigt davon, wie dicht jeder Song war, aber irgendwie hat dieser diese erstaunliche Energie und diesen Spirit eingefangen. Es ist auch eines der lustigsten und fröhlichsten Alben, die ich je gehört habe, und es hat mich gelehrt, dass Musik nicht immer so lyrisch/gesangsfokussiert sein muss.

Ellen: This was The album of my childhood, front to back. „Motorcycle Drive By“ was one of my first favorite songs, I used to ask my dad to play the „motorcycle song“ when we were in the car. Recently Melina and I were in San Francisco and we spent a really amazing day just driving around the city and doing touristy shit, she’s from there and wanted to convince me to love it. We went to the ocean and stuck our feet in the water and afterwards when I had the aux cable in the car I put this album on and she was shocked when I started screaming along to every lyric. Somehow after years of friendship and talking nonstop about music, I had failed to mention this was one of my biggest inspirations. Anyways, I love San Francisco now.
Dies war das Album meiner Kindheit, von vorne nach hinten. „Motorcycle Drive By“ war einer meiner ersten Lieblingssongs, ich habe meinen Vater immer gebeten, den „Motorradsong“ zu spielen, wenn wir im Auto saßen. Kürzlich waren Melina und ich in San Francisco und wir haben einen wirklich tollen Tag damit verbracht, einfach durch die Stadt zu fahren und Touristenscheiße zu machen. Sie kommt von dort und wollte mich davon überzeugen, es zu lieben. Wir sind ans Meer gegangen und haben unsere Füße ins Wasser gesteckt und danach, als ich das Aux-Kabel im Auto hatte, legte ich dieses Album auf und sie war schockiert, als ich anfing, zu jedem Liedtext mitzuschreien. Irgendwie hatte ich nach Jahren der Freundschaft und des ununterbrochenen Redens über Musik versäumt zu erwähnen, dass dies eine meiner größten Inspirationen war. Wie auch immer, ich liebe San Francisco jetzt.

Broken Social Scene – You Forgot It In People
Melina: Every song on this album is insanely good. The production, engineering, and mixing really does it for me. When you listen to the record as a whole it feels like you’ve entered a different universe but there’s still a familiarity with the catchy melodies and intimate lyrics. This band is one of the best and my go to when I’m feeling moody.
Jeder Song auf diesem Album ist wahnsinnig gut. Die Produktion, das Engineering und das Mischen machen es hier wirklich für mich aus. Wenn Sie sich die Platte als Ganzes anhören, haben Sie das Gefühl, in ein anderes Universum eingetreten zu sein, aber die eingängigen Melodien und intimen Texte sind immer noch vertraut. Diese Band ist eine der besten und ich höre sie, wenn ich launisch bin.
SZA – CTRL
Ellen: I know this album hasn’t been out for super long but I have a pretty short attention span sometimes when it comes to music so it says a lot that I still listen to this like once a week. It’s just perfection in every single way. The songwriting is unreal and the way she writes and sings vocal melodies is completely unique to her and very inspiring. I got to see her once at a really small club right after this record came out and it was one of the greatest shows I’ve ever been to, I’ll never forget it.
Ich weiß, dass dieses Album noch nicht so lange auf dem Markt ist, aber ich habe manchmal eine ziemlich kurze Aufmerksamkeitsspanne, wenn es um Musik geht, also sagt es viel aus, dass ich es immer noch etwa einmal pro Woche höre. Es ist einfach Perfektion in jeder Hinsicht. Das Songwriting ist unwirklich und die Art und Weise, wie sie Gesangsmelodien schreibt und singt, ist völlig einzigartig und sehr inspirierend. Ich habe sie einmal in einem wirklich kleinen Club gesehen, direkt nachdem diese Platte herauskam, und es war eine der großartigsten Shows, die ich je gesehen habe. Das werde ich nie vergessen.

Thx – Lomelda (2017)
Melina: When I hear this record I think of one of the best years of my life. I was on tour for most of 2017 and I was constantly searching and listening to music that I so badly wanted to connect to so when this came out it was gameover. Hannah is such a brilliant writer and she has this special power in her music that just pulls you in.
Wenn ich diese Platte höre, denke ich an eines der besten Jahre meines Lebens. Ich war den größten Teil von 2017 auf Tour und habe ständig Musik gesucht und gehört, mit der ich mich unbedingt verbinden wollte. Als dieses Lied herauskam, war das Spiel vorbei. Hannah ist eine so brillante Autorin und sie hat diese besondere Kraft in ihrer Musik, die einen einfach in ihren Bann zieht.
Green Day – American Idiot
Ellen: This is SUCH a good album and SO much fun to listen to on a long drive. It’s also a pretty long album so it kills an hour really well. My bandmate in Palehound, Larz, is the ultimate Green Day fan and the two of us belt every lyric to this when it’s on. We once toured just the two of us in my Honda Element, which can only play CDs, and we found the CD of American Idiot at an indoor flea market and it really did not leave the stereo for like a whole week. Anytime the 2 of us are jamming together we attempt all of Jesus Of Suburbia.
Das ist so ein gutes Album und es macht so viel Spaß, es auf einer langen Fahrt zu hören. Es ist auch ein ziemlich langes Album, also kann man eine Stunde damit wirklich gut totschlagen. Mein Bandkollege bei Palehound, Larz, ist der ultimative Green-Day-Fan, und wir beide schmettern jeden Songtext dazu immer mit. Einmal sind wir nur zu zweit in meinem Honda Element auf Tour gewesen, der nur CDs abspielen kann. Wir haben dann die von „American Idiot“ auf einem Indoor-Flohmarkt gefunden, und sie hat die Stereoanlage wirklich eine ganze Woche lang nicht verlassen. Jedes Mal, wenn wir beide zusammen jammen, versuchen wir uns an „Jesus Of Suburbia“.
