My Soundtrack: Valley

Bleachers – Don’t Take the Money

This song came out right around the time we were starting to write our new record. Jack Antonoff as a producer and Bleachers records have always been a huge inspiration to us. His perspective on home recording and making records is something we always talk about in the studio. „Don’t Take The Money“ in particular has this indescribable fleeing to it- much like a kid racing home on his bike past curfew. It’s the vocals jumping from wet to dry on that prechorus and that arena shouting chorus about not giving in mixed with Lordes haunting vocals in the distance. This song played a huge role in how we wanted the songs on our record to feel. We would listen to it constantly on our writing trip. We have vivid images of getting on the subway and walking the streets in Brooklyn to it.

Dizzy – Joshua

This quite possibly might be one of our favourite songs ever. If any one of us were going through a breakup right now this would have to be a first listen. Something so simple and haunting about this track. When Katie goes into “there’s a bitterness and a mellow sting” – the song just throws you in a whirlwind. That melody is everything. Katie’s vocal delivery mixed with Dizzys flawless production and sound shaping is so special. „Joshua“ reminds us of suburbia and walking home from school thinking about a boy/girl. Also the lead guitar part in this song may be the greatest of all time. This song and their entire record Baby Teeth changed a lot about the way we hear and produce our music. Thank you Dizzy!!

Wenn Katie „There’s a bitterness and a mellow sting“ singt, zieht einen dieser Song einfach in einen Wirbelsturm. Danke, Dizzy!

Babygirl – Over In No Time

Babygirl is a duo based out of Toronto. Probably one of the greatest songwriters coming out of the city right now who we are so lucky to call friends. This song in particular hits hard for us. We reference their production and writing in the studio constantly. Kirsten and Cameron put more effort into lyrics, melody and the sonic blanket a song sits in than anyone we know. Every thought, every word in this song we’ve felt at some point this year. Love can be tough sometimes and this song helps thinking about it. “On the drive over I think about you, I think about lovers and the things that they do” – one of our favourite moments and lyrics…legit crying on the spot listening to it. Babygirl if you’re reading this…we couldn’t have made a record without your songs to look up to. Love y’all!

“On the drive over I think about you, I think about lovers and the things that they do” – einer unserer liebsten Momente und Texte.

Bon Iver – 22 Over S00n

Fell in love with the sampling all over this song and record. It introduced us to sampling audio in a whole new way which we used as a heavy reference for our record. The glitches, pitched vocals and imperfect loops around Justins falsetto in this song just felt like such a breath of fresh air. It did not sound like anything we were hearing at the time and made us think about embracing imperfection around structure. We ended up getting this op-1 sampler that this song uses and it completely shifted the sonic fabric of our record. Really thankful for this song. Lots of memories starting our album flash by when hearing it. “It might be over soon, so lets embrace every moment we have making an album and how fortunate we are” was something we always thought about.

It might be over soon, so lets embrace every moment we have making an album and how fortunate we are” – das haben wir uns immer wieder gedacht.

Charlie Puth – BOY

Song of the summer for us. Probably have busted out more late night dance moves to „BOY“ than any other song. It’s pretty much the perfect new age 80s pop song. Every melody is infectious, great story and writing AS WELL as the smoothest keyboard solo you’ll ever hear. „BOY“ and the rest of Charlie’s album remind us a lot of Los Angeles when we were on our album writing trip. We always think of driving in our Uber through Santa Monica. Charlie is untouchable when it comes to pop records. One of the best ever. We plan on having post show Charlie Puth dance parties on tour.

Vielleicht der perfekte New Age 80s Pop-Song.
