Es war ein ereignisreiches Jahr für Francis of Delirium. Die Gute war mit Künstler:innen wie Soccer Mommy, Briston Maroney, Horsegirl und The Districts auf Tour, trat bei Festivals wie dem Treefort Fest, Shaky Knees, Eurosonic und Iceland Airwaves auf und gab den Support für The 1975 und Wolf Alice. Jetzt haut Francis of Delirium mal wieder eine neue Single raus: „Real Love“ zeigt eine neue Seite der luxemburgischen Künstlerin Jana Bahrich, der Frontfrau von Francis of Delirium. Die 21-Jährige wendet sich in „Real Love“ von der düsteren Lyrik der grunge-inspirierten Songs ihrer ersten drei EPs ab. Sie offenbart dabei eine weichere, offene, hoffnungsvollere und verletzlichere Klangpalette. Uns stand Jana nun für unsere My-Soundtrack-Reihe Rede und Antwort.
Joni Mitchell – Hejira
I think „Hejira“ is a perfect album and Joni Mitchell’s writing and sonic palette on this is unreal. I also love a roadtrip album. My family’s favourite kind of holiday was packing everything into the car and driving for hours, so there’s this beautiful nostalgia to any kind of roadtrip art.

I think that might also be why I love touring so much, so basically I will love anything about driving and being on the road. Jaco Pastorius’ bass playing is also so magical and smooth and adds so much texture, it’s almost flute like. Beautiful writing, perfect songs. It doesn’t get better.
Ich finde, „Hejira“ ist ein perfektes Album und Joni Mitchells Schreib- und Klangpalette ist geradezu unwirklich. Es ist auch ein Roadtrip-Album, was ich wirklich liebe. Der liebste Urlaub meiner Familie bestand darin, alles ins Auto zu packen und stundenlang zu fahren. Daher ist jede Art von Roadtrip-Kunst mit dieser schönen Nostalgie verbunden. Ich glaube, das ist vielleicht auch der Grund, warum ich das Reisen so sehr liebe.
Im Grunde liebe ich alles, was mit Autofahren und Unterwegssein zu tun hat. Auch das Bassspiel von Jaco Pastorius ist so magisch und sanft. Es fügt so viel Textur hinzu, dass es fast an eine Flöte erinnert. Wunderschöne Texte. Perfekte Songs. Es geht nicht besser.
Charli XCX – vroom vroom
I love Charli XCX, I went and saw her twice on her Crash tour last year. And I didn’t really realize that shows could feel so exciting and be that level of fun before. I go to a lot of shows and I love going to a small divey venue, but the feeling you get from 2 thousand people dancing and screaming along to songs to the point where you can feel the floor bending is amazing. The show felt like such a safe space to fully express yourself and let go and that was a really wonderful thing, and when she plays ‘Vroom Vroom’ the venue explodes.
It is really inspiring that she can have a relatively minimal stage set up, of just her, two dancers and a very cool backdrop and the show still have so impact. I use her shows as a north star in terms of the energy both she and the crowd are bringing.
Ich liebe Charli XCX. Letztes Jahr habe ich sie gleich zweimal auf ihrer Crash-Tour gesehen. Ich wusste vorher nicht wirklich, dass sich Shows so aufregend anfühlen und so viel Spaß machen können. Ich gehe zu vielen Konzerten und liebe es, in eine kleine Hallen zu gehen. Aber das Gefühl, das man bekommt, wenn zweitausend Leute zu den Liedern tanzen und schreien, bis man spürt, wie sich der Boden beugt, ist erstaunlich. Die Show fühlte sich wie ein so sicherer Ort an, an dem man sich voll ausdrücken und loslassen konnte, und das war wirklich wunderbar. Wenn sie „Vroom Vroom“ spielt, explodiert der Veranstaltungsort.
Es ist wirklich inspirierend, dass sie mit einem relativ minimalen Bühnenaufbau – bestehend aus ihr, zwei Tänzern und einer sehr coolen Kulisse – die Show trotzdem so beeindruckend machen kann. Ich nutze ihre Shows als Vorbild. Gerade in Sachen Energie, die sie und das Publikum mitbringen.
Pearl Jam – Jeremy
I have to talk about Pearl Jam because they sort of exclusively soundtracked my early teen years. I would obsessively watch live videos of Pearl Jam, with Eddie Vedder climbing and jumping off of things and I very desperately wanted to be him. Their Pukkelpop performance is still so fun to watch. ‘Jeremy’ was the first Pearl Jam song I discovered. I found most of my new music through YouTube back then and the ‘Jeremy’ music video really resonated with me, the angst and darkness of it all, as well as Eddie Vedder’s performance.
Ich muss über Pearl Jam sprechen, weil sie sozusagen ausschließlich den Soundtrack für meine frühen Teenagerjahre darstellten. Ich schaute mir wie besessen Live-Videos von Pearl Jam an, in denen Eddie Vedder auf Gegenstände kletterte und von ihnen heruntersprang, und ich wollte unbedingt wie er sein. Es macht immer noch großen Spaß, ihrem Pukkelpop-Auftritt zuzuschauen. „Jeremy“ war dabei der erste Song von Pearl Jam, den ich entdeckte. Den Großteil an für mich neuer Musik habe ich damals über YouTube gefunden und das Video zu „Jeremy“, die Angst und Dunkelheit des Ganzen sowie Eddie Vedders Auftritt haben mich wirklich berührt.
Mr. Bach Comes to Call: Music/Podcast
‘Mr.Bach Comes to Call’ quite literally soundtracked my evenings when I was younger. Probably from ages 6-8. I had the CD and a small CD player in my room, and would listen either to this or the Beatles 1 album to fall asleep to. So Bach and his music ended up being pretty important to me and must have seeped into my brain and musical vocabulary subconsciously.
„Mr.Bach Comes to Call“ war im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes der Soundtrack meiner Abende, als ich noch jünger war. Wahrscheinlich war ich damals sechs oder acht Jahre alt. Ich hatte die CD und einen kleinen CD-Player in meinem Zimmer und hörte mir zum Einschlafen entweder dieses oder das Beatles-1-Album an. Bach und seine Musik waren für mich also ziemlich wichtig und müssen unbewusst in mein Gehirn und meinen musikalischen Wortschatz eingedrungen sein.
Paul Simon – Graceland
With our new song ‘Real Love’, and this batch of songs I’ve been writing currently, I’ve kind of veered away from the darkness that our last EP ‘The Funhouse’ had. I found I just couldn’t really write in that dark headspace anymore, and I started looking to songs like Graceland by Paul Simon as references in terms of production and feeling, the melancholy of it while still remaining upbeat and sounding light can be a hard thing to achieve.
Mit unserem neuen Song „Real Love“ und dieser Reihe von Songs, die ich gerade schreibe, habe ich mich irgendwie von der Dunkelheit entfernt, die unsere letzte EP „The Funhouse“ hatte. Ich stellte fest, dass ich in diesem dunklen Kopfraum einfach nicht mehr wirklich schreiben konnte. Also fing ich an, Songs wie „Graceland“ von Paul Simon als Referenzen in Bezug auf Produktion und Gefühl zu betrachten. Die Melancholie, die in dem Lied steckt, während es dennoch optimistisch scheint und leicht klingt – das ist schwierig zu erreichen.

Sufjan Stevens – Impossible Soul
I love the scale of Sufjan Stevens songs, their density in lyrics or vastness in length, give the listener so much room to sit in them and explore. I can listen to this song for hours on end because there is so much to uncover. His ability to commit to ideas and go full out is really admirable and this song just does something to my soul that is…impossible to explain. ‘It’s a long life, better pace yourself!’
Ich liebe die Größe der Sufjan-Stevens-Songs, ihre Textdichte oder ihre enorme Länge, die dem Hörer so viel Raum geben, in denen diese beinahe sitzen können. Ich kann diesem Lied stundenlang zuhören, weil es so viel zu entdecken gibt. Seine Fähigkeit, sich auf Ideen einzulassen und sein Bestes zu geben, ist wirklich bewundernswert. Dieser Song berührt einfach meine Seele, die … das ist unmöglich zu erklären. „Es ist ein langes Leben, lass es dir lieber gut gehen!“
Dire Straits – Sultans of Swing
Sultans of Swing was one of the first songs I started to learn on electric guitar. Granted, it took me about a year to finish learning, because the licks were very complicated and required a lot of pinky finger strength, which takes awhile to develop when you are a beginner guitar player. My dad would play a lot of dire straits in the car, so I learned it to impress him I imagine.
I can still remember which YouTube channel I used to learn the song, GuitarLessons365Song, so shout out to that guy! Learning Sultans of Swing helped my improve a lot of my fingerpicking skills since Mark Knopfler pretty exclusively fingerpicks his songs. I took me about 4 years to really start using a guitar pick because of him. I would be playing power chords on the guitar and was using my finger nails.

Das Erlernen von „Sultans of Swing“ hat mir geholfen, viele meiner Fingerpicking-Fähigkeiten zu verbessern, da Mark Knopfler seine Songs praktisch ausschließlich mit Fingerpicks spielt. Wegen ihm hat es ungefähr vier Jahre gedauert, bis ich wirklich angefangen habe, ein Gitarrenplektrum zu benutzen. Ich spielte Powerchords auf der Gitarre und benutzte dabei meine Fingernägel.
