Eine brutale Kombination aus Punkrock und dreckigem Pop angereichert mit Live- und Elektronik-Beats: das ist der Sound der Cherokee Death Cats. Das anglo-schwedische Duo besteht aus Bea Persson und Rat Westlake und lebt in Göteborg. Hervorgegangen ist das Projekt aus einer Reihe von dynamischen Studiosessions und Auftritten in Underground-Clubs, benannt ist es nach einer nicht identifizierten YouTube-Sensation namens “the Death Cat of Cherokee County”. Cherokee Death Cats veröffentlichten ihre Debüt-EP “No No No” im April 2019 und unterschrieben kurz darauf bei Position Music. Die zweite EP Sick wurde dann im November desselben Jahres veröffentlicht. Der Song “No No No” wurde in der zweiten Staffel von Amazon Prime’s Show “Hanna” gespielt. Zuletzt gab es die Single “Work it Out” auf die Ohren. Uns standen Bea und Rat nun für unsere My-Soundtrack-Reihe Rede und Antwort.
THE KILLS – CAT CLAW
No secrets that The Kills are one of our biggest influences. This song is from The Kills’ first EP and we love it. We love the attitude, vibe and simplicity of the arrangement. It’s raw, edgy and scratchy. You can hear why it’s called Cat Claw! We could have chosen quite a few Kills songs to be honest, but this was the first we heard from them and it’s rough, sleazy energy was a wake up call.. Also a production duo, they’re definitely a big inspiration in how we formed our sound.

Es ist kein Geheimnis, dass The Kills zu unseren größten Einflüssen zählen. Dieser Song stammt von der ersten The-Kills-EP und wir lieben ihn. Wir lieben die Einstellung, Atmosphäre und Einfachheit des Arrangements. Es ist roh, kantig und kratzig. Man kann hören, warum es Cat Claw heißt! Um ehrlich zu sein, hätten wir hier auch andere Kills-Songs auswählen können, aber dieser hier war das erste, den wir von ihnen gehört haben. Seine raue, schmuddelige Energie war ein Weckruf. Für ein Produktionsduo wie uns sind The Kills definitiv eine große Inspiration.
LE TIGRE – DECEPTACON
Le Tigre had such a great, fresh sound. Poppy, punky and all sorts in-between. Bikini Kill and Le Tigre with Kathleen Hanna were pretty much the essence of the 90s Riot Grrrl movement. Confrontational, direct, uncompromising with a clear, sharp message: “Girls to the front”. Kathleen Hanna’s delivery is so unique and the production on this tune is cool as you like and a lot of fun. We love the energy of Deceptacon and could easily dance to this tune on repeat all night. “See you later!”

PJ HARVEY – WHO THE FUCK
PJ is totally iconic. We can’t think of a single duff album this lady has made. Prolific and simply incredible in musical diversity, she’s always changing and discovering new sounds and ways to express herself. An amazing live performer too of course.
Again, it could have been any number of songs. The lo-fi production of this tune with the distorted vocal and full frontal guitar is killer and of course there’s the anger and directness of the message, that no fucker is going to tell her (you) who or how she (you) should be. There’s so many norms and expectations about how women are expected to be, what’s allowed and what’s not.. As this song says.. I’m free, I’m me, Fuck You!
PJ ist absolut ikonisch. Uns fällt kein einziges lahmes Album ein, das diese Dame gemacht hat. Sie ist produktiv und einfach unglaublich in ihrer musikalischen Vielfalt, verändert sich ständig und entdeckt neue Sounds und Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten. Natürlich ist sie auch eine tolle Live-Performerin.
Auch hier hätten wir beliebig viele Songs auswählen können. Die Lo-Fi-Produktion dieses Stücks mit dem verzerrten Gesang und der vollen Frontalgitarre ist mörderisch. Und natürlich ist da diese Wut und Direktheit der Botschaft, dass kein fucker ihr (dir) sagen kann, wer oder wie sie (du) sein sollte(st) . Es gibt so viele Normen und Erwartungen, wie Frauen sein sollen, was erlaubt ist und was nicht. Wie dieses Lied sagt.. Ich bin frei, ich bin ich, Fuck You!
PEACHES – BOYS WANNA BE HER
Speaking of “fuck you”, here’s an artist who is NOT afraid to say that … And mean it .. and quite literally on occasion .. Peaches’ mix of alternative pop and punk, of electronic and rock has been a big influence on us. And not just the music but her attitude, blatant feminist sexuality and sheer audacity which leaks out of the speakers. This tune is Dirty Deeds but the Deeds in question here are much Dirtier.
Apropos „fuck you“, hier ist eine Künstlerin, die sich NICHT scheut, das zu sagen … und es ernst meint … und gelegentlich ganz wörtlich … Peaches‘ Mix aus alternativem Pop und Punk, aus Elektro und Rock hat uns stark beeinflusst . Und nicht nur die Musik, sondern auch ihre Haltung, unverhohlene feministische Sexualität und schiere Kühnheit, die aus den Lautsprechern dringt. YEAH YEAH YEAHS – DATE WITH THE NIGHT
Bea: The first time I heard Yeah Yeah Yeahs was when they played a little, intimate festival in Stockholm. There were max 300 people in the audience. I was totally floored by Karen O’s energy and cool stage presence. Her expressive voice and the brutal energy of the music even with a line-up of just guitar, drums and vocal was a real inspiration.
Rat: I wasn’t there. I wish I had been. “Fever To Tell” is such a great album and this tune is the jewel in that crown.
Bea: Das erste Mal, dass ich die Yeah Yeah Yeahs hörte, war, als sie auf einem kleinen, intimen Festival in Stockholm spielten. Es waren maximal 300 Leute im Publikum. Ich war total überwältigt von Karen O’s Energie und cooler Bühnenpräsenz. Ihre ausdrucksstarke Stimme und die brutale Energie der Musik, selbst mit einer Besetzung nur aus Gitarre, Schlagzeug und Gesang, waren eine echte Inspiration.
Rat: Ich war nicht da. Ich wünschte aber, ich wäre es gewesen. „Fever To Tell“ ist so ein großartiges Album und diese Melodie ist das Juwel in dieser Krone.
