My Soundtrack: Shred Kelly

Ben E. King – Stand By Me

Tim: When I was a child, my dad gave me a cassette tape called ‘The Solid Gold Collection’ which was a compilation tape of songs from the 50’s and early 60’s. I remember hearing ‘Stand By Me’ on it and thinking about all of the instruments that were being played: the stand-up bass starting the song, the subtle triangle chime, the amazing voice singing the lyrics, and how they all came together set the mood of the song. After a while I found myself singing the verses and the choruses which were easy and relatable. When the song builds into a large symphony at the end I remember how big the song became. I think ‘Stand By Me’ taught me how to structure a song and create an emotion. I still think this is the perfect song from start to finish.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Soma

Tim: The album „Siamese Dream“ is still my favourite album of all time. The song ‘Soma’ is the perfect representation of the psychedelic heavy alt-rock ride that the album takes its listeners on. It’s a roller coaster song that taught me about the relationship between ambience and agony which the Smashing Pumpkins are masters of. I love the floating echoes of the opening guitar riff combined with a soft vocal on the verses and chorus. When the song explodes out of nowhere into a wall of heavy chords and anguished vocals, I want to jump out of my seat, only to be brought back down into a puddle of ambient echoes again at the outro. I think it showed me the importance of dynamics, and the ability to jump from one feel to the next while still maintaining a familiar voice.

Tracy Chapman – Fast Car

Sage: My parents had this CD when I was a kid, and I loved this song. I listened to it all the time. I love it’s simplicity, yet its power in the lyrics and delivery. There are songs that I love from my childhood because they remind me of my childhood and then there are songs that I truly love, and if I heard it for the very first time today, it would still stop me in my tracks. It is a song that has stood the test of time and I have loved forever without ever tiring of it.

Death Cab for Cutie – Transatlanticism

Sage: When I first moved from Ontario to British Columbia in 2004 – Death Cab for Cutie was one of the bands that accompanied me as my life changed from a teenager to an adult. Transatlanticism is one of the most beautiful songs I think I have ever heard. The slow build, the space, the piano in the intro, the build to gang vocals at the end. I would put this song on in my headphones every night when I got home from a night out and get lost in it. I still lose myself in it now.

Phish – You Enjoy Myself

Ty: “You Enjoy Myself” by Phish has you on a psychedelic journey right out of the gate. This composition has it all. Classical, funk, rock, syncopation, vocal harmony  gibberish, and when consumed live, even trampolines. The first time I witnessed it in concert, I was left standing there, mind-blasted and wondering “what the hell just happened”. I’d been to a few concerts by this point, but nothing like this. The only discernible lyrics are four words which show up at around five and a half minutes following a tension built peak that lands itself in some of the stickiest funk you’ll ever hear from four guys from Vermont. When performed live, this song has run over 30 minutes more than a few times, and usually concludes with a four part vocal jam, featuring a light show that will send you running to the ticket booth for the next show. You can call it YEM.

The Paper Kites – Too Late

Ryan: „Too Late“ by The Paper Kites has been heavy on my rotation since I’d first heard it about 3 years ago. I’ve always marveled at songs that use space as if it were an instrument. The song makes me think of powerful forces like longing, timing, loss, regret, connection, sorrow. It is patient, purposeful and refined; there is a quiet confidence in it’s sonic simplicity. It implies the band has a deep understanding of the connection between emotion and sound. One of many songs that I wish I’d written.

Future Islands – Balance

Jordan: “Balance” by Future Islands has been a favourite song of mine since I first heard it years ago. The driving rhythm supported by gritty 1/8th notes on the bass hits hard after the ambient intro. While this is something tried, tested, and true, it still feels unique and new. The band does a great job of maintaining space in the song without sacrificing how upbeat and danceable it is. The opening lyric has always stuck with me and solidifies it as one of my all-time favourites, “You can clean around the wound but if you want it to heal, it just takes time”.

Absolute Faves von mir: “You can clean around the wound but if you want it to heal, it just takes time”.
