Das Dream-Pop-Duo Sports aus Oklahoma – bestehend aus Christian Theriot und Cale Chronister – hat gerade sein lang erwartetes selbstbetiteltes Album „Sports“ auf den Markt gebracht. Zwölf Songs zwischen schimmernder Pop-Eleganz, subtiler Psychedelik und kontrollierter Verzerrung ergeben ein Werk, das weniger nach Neuerfindung klingt als nach bewusster Selbstverortung. Selbst verorten sollten sich Theriot und Chronister auch für uns – und zwar für diese My-Soundtrack-Episode.

The Gorillaz are sort of my North Star. From the production style to the songs and collaborations. They are just inherently cool. It blows my mind that Damon was able to have two incredibly successful arena-playing bands. Dream collaboration.

Die Gorillaz sind so etwas wie mein Nordstern. Vom Produktionsstil über die Songs bis hin zu den Kollaborationen – sie sind einfach unglaublich cool. Es ist für mich unfassbar, dass Damon es geschafft hat, zwei so unglaublich erfolgreiche Bands zu haben, die in großen Arenen spielen. Eine absolute Traum-Kollaboration.
Sega Bodega – UM UM
I discovered Sega Bodega just as we were starting to work on new music. I fell in love with his production style. It felt extremely modern to me but still retained so much melodic beauty. This track influenced the first track (Gravestone) that starts our new record. One of the working album titles was “Cale & Christian” so it gave me the idea for the song to start with our voices.
Ich entdeckte Sega Bodega genau zu dem Zeitpunkt, als wir mit der Arbeit an neuer Musik begannen. Ich war sofort von seinem Produktionsstil begeistert. Er wirkte extrem modern auf mich und besaß gleichzeitig eine unglaubliche melodische Schönheit. Dieser Track beeinflusste den ersten Song („Gravestone“), mit dem unser neues Album beginnt. Einer der Arbeitstitel für das Album war „Cale & Christian“, was mich auf die Idee brachte, den Song mit unseren Stimmen beginnen zu lassen.
A.G. Cook – Official
I discovered A.G. Cook around the same time as Sega Bodega and fell in love with his production style as well. I was really into the idea of being able to make music with just a laptop and it still be quite compelling. Not feeling like you have to have a studio space and tons of gear to create. I love his ability to create pop songs that feel futuristic and dream-like. You can’t assign a decade to his music and I think that is so cool.
Ich entdeckte A.G. Cook ungefähr zur gleichen Zeit wie Sega Bodega und war sofort von seinem Produktionsstil begeistert. Die Idee, Musik nur mit einem Laptop zu machen und trotzdem etwas wirklich Eindrucksvolles zu schaffen, faszinierte mich. Man hat nicht das Gefühl, unbedingt ein Studio und jede Menge Equipment zu brauchen. Ich liebe seine Fähigkeit, Popsongs zu kreieren, die futuristisch und traumhaft klingen. Seine Musik lässt sich keiner bestimmten Dekade zuordnen, und das finde ich einfach großartig.

Oasis – Columbia
A few years ago I got on a huge Oasis kick, kinda like everyone else seemed to be doing. I only knew the hits when I was a kid, and hearing this song for the first time kinda rocked me. Made me want a whole new personality. That’s the magical power Oasis has. I definitely wanted to bring a vibe like this to the new record. I wanted a song that soared like this one.
Vor ein paar Jahren bin ich total auf Oasis abgefahren, so wie es damals alle anderen auch gemacht haben. Ich kannte als Kind nur die Hits, und als ich diesen Song zum ersten Mal hörte, hat er mich echt umgehauen. Ich wollte unbedingt eine ganz neue Persönlichkeit haben. Das ist die magische Kraft von Oasis. Genau so eine Stimmung wollte ich auch auf dem neuen Album einfangen. Ich wollte einen Song, der so mitreißend ist wie dieser.
Emf – Unbelievable
I’ve been inspired by songs I grew up hearing during the warm ups of basketball games. This was a big one when I was a kid. And listening to it now in a non-basketball environment gives it new life. I really wanted to embody that soft, confident vocal in the verses.
Ich habe mich von Liedern inspirieren lassen, die ich als Kind beim Aufwärmen vor Basketballspielen gehört habe. Dieses Lied war damals einer meiner Lieblingshits. Und es jetzt zu hören, außerhalb des Basketballs, gibt ihm eine ganz neue Bedeutung. Ich wollte diesen sanften, selbstbewussten Gesang in den Strophen unbedingt zum Ausdruck bringen.
