Mail from Manchester: Diesmal hat sich das Electro-Trio We Have Band die Zeit genommen, an unserer My-Soundtrack-Reihe mitzumachen. Thomas und seine Frau Dede Wegg-Prosser haben mit Partner Darren Bancroft gerade ihre EP “Out of the Woods” veröffentlicht. Im Mai kommt die Kapelle auch nach Deutschland.

1) Robyn – Don’t F*****g Tell Me What To Do (Dede)
Takes me back to our most hedonic days of touring. It was 2012, we would play this track before a show and often on the bus with a few beers after the gig, singing at the top of our voices. Robyn has some much attitude in this track, which I love. Also we could massively relate to the lyrics.
Das erinnert mich an unsere hedonistischsten Tourtage. 2012 war das, da haben wir diesen Track vor den Shows gespielt und oft auch im Bus nach dem Gig, mit ein paar Bier, lauthals mitsingend. Robyn legt so viel Attitude in diesen Track, ich liebe das. Und wir können uns auch sehr mit den Lyrics identifizieren.
2) The Kinks – Waterloo Sunset (Dede)
The Kinks are my dad’s favourite band, so this song reminds me of him singing it in his best Ray voice and how I could play his 7 inch on my tiny turntable (with its own disco lights) when I was little. I’m not a London girl, but I’ve lived there for long time. This song make me think of London, not just how beautiful the Thames is at sunset by Waterloo station, but the vibrancy and excitement London provides. Hearing this track can always make me a little nostalgic.
Die Kinks sind die Lieblingsband meines Dads. Dieser Song erinnert mich daran, wie er mit seiner besten Ray-Stimme mitsang und ich seine 7 inch auf meinem kleinen Plattenspieler (mit Diskolichtern) spielen durfte, als ich noch klein war. Ich bin kein London Girl, aber ich habe dort für lange Zeit gelebt. Dieser Song erinnert mich an London, nicht nur daran, wie schön die Themse ist bei Sonnenuntergang an der Waterloo Station, sondern auch die Schwingungen und die Aufregung, die London bietet. Dieser Track macht mich oft ein wenig nostalgisch.
3) Lemonheads – Buddy (Tom)
One of the first bands I seriously loved was Lemonheads. “It’s A Shame About Ray” was a totally seminal album in my eyes and this track “Buddy” was my favourite. I remember seeing them perform at Brixton Academy in 1993 and thinking Evan Dando was slightly otherworldly. He seemed out of control and had an energy that made me want to play music. Guitar music like Lemonheads really was my introduction into pop and obviously We Have Band has a totally different energy but songs like “Buddy” inhabit a special place in my heart.
Eine der ersten Bands, die ich wirklich liebte, waren die Lemonheads. “It’s a Shame About Ray” war ein bahnbrechendes Album in meinen Augen und der Track “Buddy” war mein Favorit. Ich erinnere mich, wie ich die Band 1993 in der Brixton Academy performen sah und damals dachte, dass Evan Dando nicht von dieser Welt war. Er schien total außer Kontrolle und hatte eine Energie, die mich dazu motivierte, Musik zu machen. Gitarrenmusik wie die der Lemonheads war meine Einführung in den Pop. Klar, We Have Band hat eine ganz andere Energie, aber Songs wie “Buddy” haben einen besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen.
4) Björk – All Is Full Of Love (Darren)
I can definitely say that Bjork is my musical heroine and I can remember very clearly the first time that I heard this song and was completely overwhelmed over by it. I find that with Bjork every bit of the music is saying something to you and the beats and the strings are speaking to you as much as her voice or the lyrics are which creates an experience that you can lose yourself inside of. Her vocal range is extraordinary and its the same with her intellectual and emotional span of lyrics. Nothing seems to be off limits to her. If she feels it she’ll sing it and thats something I’ve always tried to inject a bit of into the music I make.
Ich kann definitiv sagen, dass Björk meine musikalische Heldin ist und ich mich daran erinnere, wann ich diesen Song das erste Mal hörte und wie überwältigt ich davon war. Ich finde, dass Björks Musik immer etwas aussagt, und die Beats und die Strings genauso zu einem sprechen wie ihre Stimme oder ihre Texte. Das schafft eine Erfahrung, in der man sich komplett verlieren kann. Ihr Stimmumfang ist außergewöhnlich, genauso wie die geistige und emotionale Bandbreite ihrer Lyrics. Sie scheint keine Grenzen zu kennen. Wenn sie es fühlt, singt sie es und das wollte ich mit meiner Musik immer auch genauso halten.
5) Rufus Wainwright – One Man Guy (Darren)
I stumbled across Rufus Wainwright around the time I started seriously making music and he’s had a lasting effect on me from the that time. I think his voice is beautiful but what I think I like most about him is how he articulates the painful things he feels and has experienced into a way that is so blunt that its almost comical. This song is so fantastic because its a cover version of his father’s original track which was talking about his selfish self centred nature as a heterosexual male and here Rufus interprets it in an entirely different way to express his homosexual love for one man, which I think is brilliant.
Ich stieß auf Rufus Wainwright zu einer Zeit, als ich selbst begann, ernsthaft Musik zu machen. Seither hat er einen bleibenden Eindruck bei mir hinterlassen. Ich finde seine Stimme sehr schön, aber was ich am meisten an ihm mag ist, dass er schmerzhafte Dinge, die er fühlt und erlebt hat, auf eine Art und Weise verpackt, die gerade heraus ist und irgendwie auch komisch. Dieser Song ist fantastisch, weil es eine Coverversion eines Stücks seines Vaters ist, das sich seiner selbstsüchtigen Natur eines heterosexuellen Mannes befasst. Rufus deutet den Song komplett um, um seiner Liebe zu einem homosexuellen Mann Ausdruck zu verleihen. Brillant.
