My Soundtrack: Chris Zasche (The Head and the Heart)

#1. Bob Dylan: Nashville Skyline: Lay Lady Lay

This was the first record I can remember hearing as a kid, the first time I really heard music and recognized the uniqueness of Dylan’s voice, which sounded like nothing else. We had it on 8-track, and it was the first time I can member the concept of and album and an artist, Lay lady lay was the track that really stood out, his voice on that song is incredible.

#2 Modest Mouse : The Lonesome Crowded West: Trailer Trash

This was the first record that got me into ‚alternative‘ music. The first time I realized there was music beyond the radio and and beyond the pop/rock spectrum. It really opened my mind and ears to ‚indie‘ music, and to a whole new set of bands that we’re all doing interesting creative things. It was also right as I was starting to play guitar, and really instilled in me that creativity trumps proficiency. The music is so original and interesting, but all so simple to play, to this day I think about this album when writing music.

#3 Neil Young: Harvest: Harvest

This was my gateway album in to the music of the 60’s and 70’s. This introduced me to country-rock, to folk, to a lot of my favorite bands. Again, hearing a guy who didn’t have the best voice, or wasn’t the best guitar player, but was someone who could really make you feel something, and could really create a unique mood and sound. And an artist who borrowed from a lot of different genres, and who never felt stuck or obligated to play a certain type of music, always evolving.

#4 The Beach Boys: Good Vibrations

When going into the studio to record anything, I think of, and listen to this song to get inspired by Brian Wilson’s arrangements, and how they used all their unique voices as music and not just as a lyricist. Pretty sure this song took months to record, and sometimes that’s the approach you have to take in the studio, to work, rework, and redo to get it just right, and they got this song just right.

#5 Willie Nelson: On the Road Again

When traveling and touring starts to wear you down, when your tired, missing home, can’t remember if it’s a Friday, Tuesday or what city your in.. It’s nice to remind yourself that you’re out there playing music with your friends, seeing the country and the world, and this song sums up that sentiment. This is also a good one to put on at the beginning of a tour, gets the blood flowing again, and it’ll usually get a smile on everyone’s face.
