1) The Beatles – A Day In The Life

I loved hearing my dad play The Beatles in our house when I was growing up and when I received a vinyl copy of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club band for my 8th birthday it was like a world had opened up. It was the first record that I personally owned and I remember pouring over the artwork, all of the characters, these four colorful guys seemed straight out of a storybook. I remember A Day In The Life being full of mystery and joy and making me dance, but also feel a little terrified. It made me feel something new and powerful. Years later in high school the local radio station would play this song every morning right around the time my alarm clock went off and it worked it’s way deep into my subconscious. The Beatles later records had such a keen sense of musical storytelling and this song is right at the top.

2) Led Zeppelin – What Is And What Should Never Be

In middle school, especially as a drummer, there was nothing more liberating than sitting around with a few friends and cranking up a Led Zeppelin record, enveloping yourself in their primal rockingness. To choose one song is impossible, so I just added the first that came to mind. This song is great because it reminds me that one of their great assets was their huge dynamic range.

3) Bob Dylan – Ballad In Plain D

I remember breaking up with a girlfriend in high school and discovering this song. There was something so raw and personal about this song. It was one of those „a ha“ moments for me, when I realized the confessional element that music could have and how much it can help and even save someone from what they might be going through.

4) Oumou Sangare –  Donso

When I was 19 I traveled to Mali to study music. I had been an admirer and student of Malian music before that, but this trip challenged everything I thought I knew. It opened me up to a way of playing drums that moved the body to the core and a joy that came from doing so. It was a life changing trip and on my flight home I had the luck of sitting next to Oumou Sangare on the airplane, who’s casette I had bought the day before. She was so generous and passionate. I wore out her album Worotan that year and have continued to own it in every medium since then. She is a powerful voice, an activist, an incredible musician and a genuinely kind woman. So many great tracks over theyears, this one is called Donso off her latest record Seya.

5) A Tribe Called Quest – Can I Kick It

No one can help but nod their head back and forth when A Tribe Called Quest track comes on. As a drummer, playing along with Tribe Called Quest records in high school was about the best education I could have had. They changed it all for me and none would argue their impact on modern music. They weren’t the first to rhyme over samples of old vinyl but they did it with such taste and such a smooth flow that it felt like nothing else on earth. Musical collage artists, voices of a generation, rascals, punks, geniuses, they had it all for me.
