Straight from the Bay Area: Das Indie-Rock-Duo The Lymbs, das zuletzt im vergangenen Herbst die EP “Neon” veröffentlicht hat, eröffnet unser “My Soundtrack”-Jahr. Den Sound der Band umschreibt am besten als progressiven, zukunftsorientierten Blues, gepaart mit reflektierendem, robustem Rock. Für unsere neue “My Soundtrack”-Folge haben sich die Bandmitglieder Jeff Bell (Drums) und Gage Bickerstaff (Guitar/Vocals/Synth) die Aufgabe, die fünf Songs zu nennen, die in ihrem Leben eine große Rolle gespielt haben, untereinander aufgeteilt.

– Ben E. King – “Stand By Me”
This is the first song I can remember that effected me so deeply that I couldn’t forget it. It’s so simple, but so soulful. And to my 6- or 7-year-old ears, it was magic. Much of what music has given me has come from the feeling I initially got from that song.
Das ist der erste Song, der mich wirklich so tief berührt hat, dass ich ihn nicht vergessen konnte. So einfach, aber so voller Soul. Mit sechs, sieben Jahren fand ich das einfach magisch. Vieles, was Musik mir gegeben hat, kommt von dem Gefühl, das dieser Song in mir weckte.
– Jimi Hendrix – “Little Wing”
The next song to be a marker in my life is one of Jimi’s originals. This song sunk into my being while I was half asleep. The chordal and harmonic movement made a bigger impact on me than the vocals; another first at the time.
Der nächste Song, der einen Meilenstein für mich darstellt, ist ein echtes Jimi-Original. Er trat in mein Leben, als ich gerade im Halbschlaf war. Die Akkorde und die Harmonien hatten einen größeren Impact auf mich als der Gesang, das war damals neu für mich.
– Simon and Garfunkel – “The Boxer”
I had always liked this song, and had been listening to it my entire life before the story and power of the words reached my depths. Its effects are very personal, and as I’ve gotten older, this song has
just recently been added to my all-time top 5. It’s one of the few songs I wish I would have written.
Ich habe diesen Song schon immer gemocht und ihn mein ganzes Leben lang gehört, auch bevor ich seinen Inhalt so richtig verstand. Seine Auswirkungen sind für mich sehr persönlich. Und als ich älter wurde, wanderte dieser Song in meine All-Time-Top-Five. Einer der wenigen Songs, von denen ich wünschte, ich hätte ihn geschrieben.

– The Beatles – “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”
I tended to steer away from music of the 60s and 70s growing up, simply because it was what my parents listened to. And as my older sister got into it, I figured I wasn’t old enough for this “music for
old people”. Boring! There were many a car ride with my parents’ music on the main speakers, while I’d put my headphones in and listen to “Nellyville”, Blink 182, or Godsmack – again. I guess my portable CD player’s battery died at some point, so I listened. It was somewhere in the back half of “She’s So Heavy” where I was lost in the chilling organ and arpeggios. I was lost and confused. I got excited. It was progressive and disorienting. And new! Yet from the past. So, it marked a turning point where I’d begin to put the music of my generation on hold while I played catch up with influential music from before my time.
Ich neigte dazu, mich von der Musik der sechziger und siebziger Jahre abzuwenden, als ich aufwuchs. Einfach aus dem Grund, weil das die Musik meiner Eltern war. Und als meine ältere Schwester dann noch diese Musik hörte, war mir schnell klar, dass ich noch zu jung für solche Alte-Leute-Musik war. Langweilig! Ich erinnere mich an viele Autofahrten mit meinen Eltern, in denen ihre Musik aus den Lautsprechern kam, während ich über meinen tragbaren CD-Player “Nellyville”, Blink 182 oder Godsmack hörte. Bis die Batterien meines CD-Players plötzlich leer waren und ich gezwungen war, der Musik meiner Eltern zuzuhören. Es muss irgendwann in der zweiten Hälfte von “She’s so heavy” passiert sein, als ich mich völlig in den unheimlichen Chellos und Arpeggios verlor. Ich war verloren und aufgeregt. Es war so progressiv und verwirrend. Und neu! Und doch aus der Vergangenheit. Der Song markierte einen Wendepunkt, ich begann nun, mich für Musik vor meiner Zeit zu interessieren.
– Radiohead – “Weird Fishes / Arpeggi”
This is a drummer’s song right here. A perfect groove for all the layers. It’s a trance in the middle of one of the greatest albums of all time. And, for 10 years now I’ve been warming up to this song. And
the cool thing is that, like all great songs, it grows and develops with each listen. This isn’t the best Radiohead song, nor is it the best song on this album, but I get attached to songs that hold up on
the [drum] kit. You’d think that a linear song like “Weird Fishes” wouldn’t, but that’s not the point. The point is, I get to listen to this song without thinking too much about groove changes or anything,
and enjoy going through the motions of drumming while drowning in an ocean of sound.
Das ist ein echter Drummer-Song. Ein perfekter Groove. Eine Trance in der Mitte eines der besten Alben aller Zeiten. Seit zehn Jahren wärme ich mich nun schon zu diesem Song auf. Und das Coole ist, dass er – wie alle großartigen Songs – bei jedem Hören wächst und sich entwickelt. Es ist vielleicht nicht der beste Radiohead-Song oder der beste auf diesem Album, aber ich habe aufgrund seines Drum-Parts eine spezielle Verbindung zu ihm. Man glaubt, ein linearer Song wie “Weird Fishes” habe so etwas nicht, aber das ist nicht der Punkt. Es geht darum, dass ich diesen Song höre, ohne mir über Groove-Wechsel oder so Gedanken zu machen, sondern einfach in das Drumming, in das Soundmeer eintauchen kann.
