Mit ihrem im Sommer veröffentlichten Album “V” gaben die Wavves ihren Zuhörern ordentlich fuzzigen Noise-Pop auf die Ohren. Ein teils depressiv, teils durchgeknallt anmutendes Machwerk. Ob sich das auch im Musikgeschmack von Wavves-Bassist Stephen Pope widerspiegelt? Er verrät’s uns in unserer neusten My-Soundtrack-Ausgabe.

1. R. Stevie Moore – I Like to Stay Home
R. Stevie Moore is one of the great home recording artists who’s been doing it since the ’70s and he’s reemerged in the past few years thanks in large part to bands like Ariel Pink talking about how great his influence is. This song is pop genius with perfectly agoraphobic lyrics and I couldn’t stay home without it.
R. Stevie Moore gehört zu den ganz großen Home Recording Artists. Er ist schon seit den Siebzigern dabei und in den letzten Jahren wieder etwas mehr ins Rampenlicht gerückt – dank Bands wie Ariel Punk, die er stark beeinflusst hat. Dieser Titel ist ein genialer Pop-Song mit perfekt agoraphobischen Lyrics. Ich könnte ohne ihn nicht zu Hause sein.
2. Alex Chilton – Like Flies on Sherbert
Growing up in Memphis I was always familiar with Big Star but didn’t realize they never really “broke” into mainstream audiences until record collector’s recently started recognizing how great and important they are. Alex Chilton’s solo record “Like Flies on Sherbert” is one of my all time faves and the title track showcases Chilton’s unique voice and production style. Totally weird and totally beautiful. If I ever feel homesick this brings me back to the right state of mind.
Als jemand, der in Memphis aufgewachsen ist, war mir Big Star natürlich immer ein Begriff, aber ich bekam nicht mit, dass sie es nie so wirklich in den Mainstream geschafft hatten, bis die Plattensammler kürzlich bemerkt haben, wie großartig und wichtig die Band doch ist. Alex Chiltons Solo-Platte “Like Flies on Sherbert” ist einer meiner allerliebsten und der Titelsong lässt Chiltons einzigartige Stimme und den Produktionsstil so richtig glänzen. Total abgedreht und unheimlich schön. Immer wenn ich Heimweh habe, rückt mir dieser Song den Kopf gerade.
3. The Crucifucks – Go Bankrupt and Die
One of my all time favorite punk bands. Doc Dart, or “26”, has the perfect balance of annoying and angry in his voice, combined with perfect punk lyrical content. He sounds genuinely angry with the first lines, “I estimated your worth today…”. I love to put this on when I get pissed off about how unfair the world is.
Eine meiner liebsten Punk-Bands aller Zeiten. Doc Dart, oder “26”, hat die perfekte Mischung aus “nervtötend” und “wütend” in seiner Stimme, kombiniert mit perfekten Punk-Texten und Inhalten. Er hört sich wirklich verärgert an in diesen ersten Zeilen, “I estimated your worth today…”. Ich höre den Song gerne, wenn ich gerade angepisst bin, weil die Welt gerade mal wieder unfair ist.
4. The Everly Brothers – It’s All Over
The Everly Brothers are amazing. They have so many good songs to choose from but this one is so sad and so beautiful its hard not to feel emotional listening to the song. “It’s all over, didn’t even cry. I just stopped living, when you said goodbye.”
Die Every Brothers sind wunderbar. Sie haben so eine große Auswahl an guten Songs, aus denen man sich jetzt einen rauspicken könnte, aber dieser hier ist so schön und traurig, dass man nicht umhin kommt, emotional zu werden, wenn man ihn hört. “It’s all over, didn’t even cry. I just stopped living, when you said goodbye.”
5. Devo – Blockhead
Devo seems to be the first “weird” band that punk purists listen to when they stray away from straight up punk. I was no different and it totally makes sense to me. Devo is probably the punkest band ever, wrapped up in a bizarre futuristic package that is somehow easily accessible even though its so weird and different to anything that people may be familiar with. I feel like every songwriter wishes they could capture the quirky structures, weirdo lyrics, and insane instrumentation that Devo always has but nobody ever comes close. I was introduced to deeper cuts when the short-lived Memphis band Angry Angles (mid 2000’s band with Jay Reatard and Alix Brown) covered “Blockhead”. I loved it and its stuck with me ever since.
Devo ist gemeinhin die erste Weird Band, die Punk-Puristen hören, wenn sie sich etwas vom Straight Up Punk entfernen. War bei mir auch nicht anders und es ergibt auch Sinn. Devo ist wohl die punkigste Band aller Zeiten, eingewickelt in eine bizarr-futuristische Verpackung, zu der man leicht Zugang findet, obwohl sie so abgedreht und anders ist, als alles, was Leute sonst so gewohnt sind. Ich glaube, viele Songwriter würden ebenfalls gerne etwas von diesen quirky structures, abgedrehten Lyrics und der wahnsinnigen Instrumentation einfangen, wie es Devo immer gelingt, aber sie kommen da nicht ran. Ich wurde auf die Gruppe aufmerksam, als die kurzlebige Memphis-Band Angry Angels (Mitte der Nuller Jahre mit Jay Reatard und Alix Brown) “Blockhead” coverte. Ich liebte es und der Track blieb bei mir hängen.
