My Soundtrack: Sophie Auster

1) Tom Waits – Take it with me

My parents and I would listen to this song when I was growing up. My Dad is an avid Waits fan and he turned the whole family into huge appreciators of his music. Waits has three modes of writing: simple and sentimental, raucous cabaret, and bluesy. This song in particular is culled from his sentimental side and I always cry when I listen to it. His music has definitely influenced my own writing and eclectic style.

2) The Beatles – A Day in the Life

I became a Beatles fan when I was seven. I thought it was the single greatest discovery of my life. I remember going up to people and asking them if they had heard of The Beatles (yes, everyone had heard of them). I bought everything, starting with the early albums, and then graduating to their later work. The drastic change in this song was incredibly inspiring to me. I later found out that John Lennon and Paul McCartney had written two separate songs that they joined together. The chaos in the middle of the song is thrilling. I was completely bold over by the emotional rollercoaster the song took me on as a young kid. I thought this is absolutely great.

3) Roberta Flack – The First Time I Saw Your Face

I think my Mom gave me a stack of female singer/songwriters when I was about ten or eleven and Roberta Flack was one of them. I sang this song constantly. I thought it was incredibly moving and I love Flack’s voice. It’s so rich and smooth. I remember hoping I’d have a voice like her one day.

So reich, so sanft.

4) Fiona Apple – Get Gone

Like most early adolescents I went through a withdrawn period around twelve or thirteen and discovered Fiona Apple. I loved her and, I admit, I still do. The angst of this song in particular really spoke to my feelings of being misunderstood at that age.

5) The Kinks – Milk Cow Blues

I love The Kinks! This song is so sexy and dirty. I can’t help but get up and dance when I hear it. I love Ray Davies’ voice. It’s so growly and rough- something I don’t really have in my voice. There are so many different types of voices that inspire me. I’d love to take rock and roll screaming 101!

Ich liebe The Kinks!
