My Soundtrack: Soft Ride

The Beatles – Strawberry Fields Forever

This was one of the first songs I ever heard. I was about 5 years old, when I got to borrow some old cassettes of my dad. I thnik it was the Beatles, ABBA and CCR. Pretty decent. I ended up listening to the Beatles casette all the time, I’m not sure, but I think it was the Blue Album. «Strawberry Fields Forever» was on it, and it just really caught my attention. So melodic, but also strange, and lot’s of fun noises, that’s cool when you’re a kid. So the song has just stuck with me all my life. It’s a pretty god damn good tune. I guess I could put several other Beatles songs in here, like «Something» or «A Day in the Life», but SFF gets the top spot today.

The Doors – L.A. Woman

The Doors got my attention a little later in life. I was around 17-18 and had just discovered beer, girls and psychedelic rock. What a time to be alive! How can you not dig this song, it just oozes of Morrison’s coolness. Put on this song, just go for a ride. Either in car or into yourself, it’s just a classic, man.

The Strokes – Hard to Explain

Probably my teenage anthem. I remember in the late 1990’s, listening to the radio and it was full of this weird music. After Britpop, it was almost like guitar bands were not cool anymore. You’d have «Macarena», «The Ketchup Song» and E-Type destroying the radio. Then, a friend that subsrcibed to NME (he was of course the coolest in the class), told me about this american band that was gonna re-invent rock ’n‘ roll. It was The Strokes and from the first moment I was sold. It was after I’d heard The Strokes I started playing guitar and writing songs. It sounded so easy. «Alright, I can also do this», I thought. To this day I really believe that The Strokes‘ «Is this It» did more for guitar rock than any other album in the 2000’s. It made rock n‘ roll cool again.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Servo

Such an underrated band. This song is from their album «Give it back!» and if you haven’t checked it out, you should. The main riff in the song is so good, and it just drags you on for the ride. I remember sitting really hungover in a flat with some of the guys in Electric Eye, watching the documentary about the band. It’s called «DIG». It was pretty awesome.
