1) Brian Eno – An Ending (Ascent)
This track defines what I love about Brian Eno and the world of ambient music. Without Eno (and Daniel Lanois) the world would be a very different place – I don’t think U2 would be where they are today.
Dieser Track definiert das, was ich an Brian Eno und Ambient Music liebe. Ohne Eno (und Daniel Lanois) wäre die Welt ein anderer Ort. Ich glaube, U2 wären heute ohne ihn nicht hier.
2) Elton John – Tiny Dancer
John Frusciante played a chorus of this song, between songs, when I saw the Chili Peppers in Dublin in ’92 on the BSSM tour, I hadn’t a clue what the song was but immediately fell in love with the melody. The next day I bought a bootleg cassette of a gig from that same tour and discovered that it was Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer”. I went straight out and bought “Madman Across The Water” and have loved that song ever since. That tour-bus scene from Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous”… I rest my case!

Ich kannte den Titel nicht, verliebte mich aber sofort in die Melodie. Am nächsten Tag kaufte ich mir eine Bootleg-Kassette der selben Tour und fand heraus, dass es sich um Elton Johns “Tiny Dancer” handelte. 3) Faith No More – Midlife Crisis
The first single released off one of my all time favorite albums, “Angel Dust”. This band, to me, represents what making music and being in a band is all about.
Die erste Single aus einem meiner liebsten Alben, “Angel Dust”. Diese Band repräsentiert für mich all das, was Musik und das In-einer-Band-sein ausmacht.
4) Radiohead – Paranoid Android
I was obsessed by The Bends at the time and was eagerly awaiting their next release. I remember the first time in was played on air, on BBC Radio 1, we were driving around Belfast (Northern Ireland) in my friend’s car – I was blown away. OK Computer is in my top five albums of all time.
Ich war wie besessen von The Bends zu dieser Zeit und habe mit Spannung ihre nächste Veröffentlichung erwartet. Ich erinnere mich, als der Track das erste Mal on air gespielt wurde, auf BBC Radio 1, da fuhren wir gerade in Belfast im Wagen eines Kumpels herum. Ich war hin und weg. “OK Computer” gehört zur Top-5 meiner liebsten Alben.
5) Allegri – Miserere
I used to sing in the Palestrina Choir in Dublin, and this was my all time favorite piece to sing. It was written for two choirs, so we used to split the choir in two. I think that “high C” is possibly the highest note I’ve ever sung in public!
Ich sang dereinst im Palestrina Choir in Dublin, und dieses Stück sang ich am liebsten. Es wurde für zwei Chöre geschrieben, deshalb spalteten wir unseren auf. Ich glaube, das hohe C ist die höchste Note, die ich je öffentlich sang.

1) The Troggs – Love is all around
This song played a very important role in my life since it was my first official live performance that took place in my school. I was 12 years old. I practiced day and night to remember the lyrics and singing in English was also a little scary. Afterwards I told my parents that I would never ever do this again. I`m pleased to say it turned quickly and since then I haven`t been able to stop doing it.
Dieser Song spielt in meinem Leben eine große Rolle, da er der erste war, den ich öffentlich darbot. In meiner Schule war das, ich war damals 12 Jahre alt. Ich übte Tag und Nacht, um den Text drauf zu haben. Die Tatsache, auf Englisch singen zu müssen, war beängstigend für mich. Danach teilte ich meinen Eltern mit, dass ich so etwas nie wieder tun würde. Ich bin froh, dass sich das dann doch schnell geändert hat und ich heute gar nicht mehr aufhören kann, zu singen.
2) Robyn – Do you really want me
“Robyn is here” was my first record and “do you really want me” was of course the favorite. Remember looking at the cover thinking she was so cool and pretty.
“Robyn is here” war mein erstes Album und “Do You Really Want Me” war darauf natürlich mein Favorit. Ich erinnere mich, dass ich sie unheimlich cool und schön auf dem Cover fand.
3) Kent – Kevlarsjäl
This track was played on repeat on cold winter night on my way home, miserable and heart broken. The lyrics reminded me of him and how badly I wanted him to be mine. Kent is definitely one of my favorite bands.
Dieser Track wurde in Endlosschleife auf meinem Nachhauseweg in einer kalten Winternacht gespielt, ich war damals traurig und mein Herz gebrochen. Die Lyrics erinnerten mich an ihnund wie sehr ich ihn für mich haben wollte. Kent gehört auf jeden Fall zu meinen Lieblingsgruppen.
4) Red Hot Chili Peppers – Porcelain
Sitting in my room in my parents house, my homework gets unfinished ever since I’ve lured to sing harmonies and that was way more appealing then studying. This particular track is the very first song I sang along to with harmonies and a new beautiful world opened up. Thank you Red Hot!
Ich saß im Zimmer meines Elternhauses und sang lieber Harmonien statt meine Hausaufgaben zu machen. Schien mir irgendwie wichtiger als lernen. Dieser spezielle Track ist der erste Song, bei dem ich die Harmonien mitsang und eine neue Welt tat sich mir auf. Danke, Red Hot!
5) Portishead – Sour Times
This track is a reminder of the best live concert I`ve ever been to so far. The concert took place at Hurricane 2011. It was evening time and the sun had just gone down the Portishead mood was in the air. Beth Gibbons is an amazing singer. One of a kind, if you ask me. She is truly an inspiration.
Dieser Track erinnert mich an das beste Konzert, das ich je besucht habe. Es war Teil des Hurricane 2011. Es war bereits Abend, die Sonne war schon untergegangen und diese besondere Portishead-Stimmung lag in der Luft. Beth Gibbons war eine außergewöhnliche Sängerin, wenn Du mich fragst. Sie ist wirklich eine Inspiration.
Rasmus Lindblom – Bass
1) Khoma – One Of Us Must Hang
The fragile crossover between indie, post-rock, and metal has never been more perfected then this. Two minutes and forty seconds into ”One Of Us Must Hang” the reality simply cease to exist and for a second time stands still just before all barrages break under the pressure of impossible dreams, the lost hope of a better world and the desperate search for a honest way to live. This is the musical equivalent to Kierkegaard’s “Leap of Faith” and probably the most complete album of all times.
Das zerbrechliche Crossover zwischen Indie, Post-Rock und Metal war nie perfekter als hier. Nach zwei Minuten und 40 Sekunden von “One Of Us Must Hang” hört die Realität auf, zu existieren, sie steht still. Kurz darauf brechen alle Dämme unter dem Druck unmöglicher Träume, verlorener Hoffnung auf eine bessere Welt und verzweifelter Suche nach einem ehrliche Weg, zu leben, zusammen. Es ist das musikalische Äquivalent zu Kierkegaards “Leap of Faith” und möglicherweise das kompletteste Album aller Zeiten.
2) Joy Division – Disorder
Fantastic band and a fantastic record. Literally every single part of Joy Division is fascinating to me. Everything from Ian Curtis persona to the reverb on the drums exercises a hypnotic power over me. After 40 minutes in the company of “Unknown Pleasures” you’re not really sure of what is sane and real and what is not, the psychotic vibe enfolds you and stays in the room like a haze. To me this is an important reminder: a great record is never about technical perfection, it’s all about what’s oozing out through my speakers 35 years after the music was recorded. The best bass line ever? Probably.
Fantastische Band und fantastisches Album. Wirklich alles an Joy Division fasziniert mich. Von Ian Curtis’ Persönlichkeit bis hin zu den Drums hat das alles eine fast hypnotische Wirkung auf mich. Nach 40 Minuten “Unknown Pleasures” weiß man nicht mehr, was geistig gesund und real ist und was nicht. Dieser psychotische Vibe breitet sich vor Dir aus und bleibt im Raum wie ein Nebel hängen. Es erinnert mich auch an etwas sehr Wichtiges: Bei einer großartigen Aufnahme geht’s nie um technische Perfektion, es geht darum, was da über die Lautsprecher transportiert wird, auch 35 Jahre, nachdem das Ding aufgenommen wurde. Die beste Bass Line ever? Wahrscheinlich.
3) Sigur Rós – Untitled #3
The vide range of bands bunched together as ”post-rock” holds a huge part of my musical identity. There are bands that come closer to perfection in composition and conception but there are few (if any) bands that seem to be as fearless as Sigur Rós. Constantly experimenting and evolving, pushing the grandiosity a bit further. I think the untitled album with the parenthesis is their greatest moment and the record that really opened my eyes to post-rock as a genre. The sound of this third track pretty much represents what I think Sigur Rós as a reference bring to Navelin.
Diese große Bandbreite an Bands, die man unter dem Begriff “Post Rock” zusammenfasst, spielen in meiner musikalischen Identität eine große Rolle. Es gibt Bands, die nah an die Perfektion in Sachen Komposition und Konzeption kommen, aber es gibt wenige, die so furchtlos sind wie Sigur Rós. Ständig sind sie am experimentieren und entwickeln, und weiten die Grenzen ihrer Großartigkeit weiter aus. Ich glaube, dass dieses unbetitelte Album ihr größter Moment ist. Die Aufnahme öffnete mir in Sachen “Post Rock” die Augen. Der Sound des dritten Tracks repräsentiert den Einfluß, den Sigur Rós auf Navelin haben.
4) Cult of Luna – Leave Me Here
I consider Cult of Luna to be the best and most consistent band in the world. Ever. A band that I always come back to and basically any of their songs would fit here. Even if both the albums ”Eternal Kingdom” and ”Vertikal I” better highlight the sterling perfection and complexity of Cult of Luna, ”Salvation” (where this track belongs) is the album that really caught my ears and actually showed me a new kind of music. Cult of Luna have always maintained an essential authenticity; never over produced, never according to any ones standards but theirs. This kind of crossover between post-rock and metal/hardcore is where I still find my strongest musical identity.
Ich sehe Cult of Luna als beste und beständigste Band der Welt an. Aller Zeiten. Eine Band, zu der ich immer wieder zurückfinde und von der ich hier jeden Song nennen könnte. Auch wenn die beiden Alben “Eternal Kingdom” und “Vertikal I” mehr die Perfektion und Komplexität von Cult of Luna unterstreichen, ist “Salvation” (auf dem sich dieser Song befindet) das Album, das mir im Ohr blieb und das mir eine neue Art der Musik offenbarte. Cult of Luna haben immer eine essenzielle Authentizität bewahrt, waren nie überproduziert und haben sich nie an einen Standard außer dem ihrigen angepasst. In dieser Art von Crossover zwischen Post-Rock und Metal/Hardcore findet sich ein großer Teil meiner musikalischen Identität.
5) Thåström – Ingen neråt sång
The soundtrack to my 15 year old self. Usually I don’t really pay that much attention to lyrics, but the poetic qualities on this record (and the ones that follows) are just fantastic (unfortunately in Swedish…). When I first heard this one I really felt there was an existential nerve that spoke to me. Together with PJ Harvey’s “To bring you my love” I also think this was one of the records that really opened my eyes for “dirtier” productions. Records aiming for expression rather then sonic perfection. One of those albums and one of those songs that never gets old.
Der Soundtrack meines 15-jährigen Ichs. Normalerweise achte ich nicht so sehr auf Texte, aber die poetische Qualität auf dieser Aufnahme (und der darauffolgenden) ist fantastisch (leider nur auf Schwedisch …). Beim ersten Hören fühlte ich, dass da bei mir ein Nerv getroffen wurde. Zusammen mit PJ Harveys “To Bring You My Love” öffnete mir das Werk die Augen für schmutzigere Produktionen. Alben, bei denen es mehr um den Ausdruck als um sonische Perfektion geht. Einer dieser Songs und eines dieser Alben, der bzw. die niemals alt werden.
Fredd Jakobsen – Drums
1) Tommy Tee – Takin Ova
This was my soundtrack for about a year or too. I was a big fan of hip-hop, and all that had to do with that culture when I was trying to find myself as a teenager. Still a big fan today, though. Great stuff from the Norwegian fjords!
Das war mein Soundtrack für ein, zwei Jahre. Ich war ein großer Hip-Hop-Fan. Das hatte was mit dieser Art von Kultur zu tun, als ich mich als Teenager gerade versuchte, zu finden. Bin aber auch heute immer noch ein großer Fan. Großartiges Zeug von den norwegischen Fjorden.
2) Wilco – She’s A Jar
When I met Elin, and started playing music together with her in another band, she introduced me to a band called Wilco. And this song really caught my ears. When I hear it today, it reminds me of that time. A time that felt very carefree.
Als ich Elin traf, und begann, mit ihr in einer anderen Band zusammen zu spielen, stellte sie mir diese Band names Wilco vor. Und die Songs sind mir im Ohr geblieben. Wenn ich sie heute höre, erinnern sie mich an diese Zeit. Diese Zeit fühlte sich sehr unbekümmert an.
3) Akira Yamaoka – Silent Hill Theme
From the video game “Silent Hill”, this great piece appears. I’ve never played the game myself, but I ended up listening to a lot of the soundtracks from it. Haven’t had the chance to play the game, but I can imagine that it is nice.
Auf dem Videospiel “Silent Hill” taucht dieser Titel auf. Ich habe das Spiel zwar nie gespielt, aber den Soundtrack dazu trotzdem gerne gehört. Konnte es bisher auch noch nie spielen, aber ich denke, es ist bestimmt gut.
4) Bob Marley – Waiting In Vain
Me and a friend of mine from high school really connected through reggae music. We wanted to start a band and we eventually found a singer and a bass player. But we didn’t take it that far, we mostly ended jamming, and playing this Bob Marley song. Yet, we’re still very close friends.
Ein Kumpel aus High School Zeiten und ich hatten mit Reggae-Musik eine starke Verbindung. Wir wollten damals gerne eine Band gründen und fanden auch einen Sänger sowie einen Bassisten. Wir sind aber nicht weit gekommen, sondern haben meist gejammt und diesen Bob-Marley-Song gespielt. Wir sind immer noch enge Freunde.
5) Mew – Comforting Sounds
Ever since I heard Mew for the first time, I was hooked. Dark pop with beautiful melodies. I’ve been fortunate to see them perform live three times, and they have ended the shows with this tune every time. Can’t beat that ending, sums up life.
Als ich Mew das erste Mal hörte, hing ich sofort am Haken. Dunkler Pop mit schönen Melodien. Ich hatte das Glück, die Band dreimal live zu erleben und sie haben jede Show mit diesem Stück beendet. Dieses Ende kann man nicht besser machen, es fasst mein Leben zusammen.
Martin Lajsic – Guitars
1) The National – Terrible Love
This album is maybe, in my opinion, the best in the 21st century so far. The song is the opening track and it blew me away from the get go. The sounds of the instruments, the lyrics and the intensity, everything is so well written, produced and performed. Just perfection!
Das Album ist – meiner Meinung nach – vielleicht das beste bisher im 21. Jahrhundert. Dieser Song ist der Opening Track und er hat mich direkt umgehauen. Der Sound der Instrumente, die Lyrics, die Intensität – alles ist so toll geschrieben, produziert und performt. Einfach perfekt.
2) Portishead – Glory Box
It was the late nineties and loads of great music came from Britain (as always). I was mostly into the whole American post punk / grunge scene and didn’t really listen to electronic stuff like house and techno. I remember putting this song on. It was a revelation! It opened new musical ideas for me instantly. I didn’t know you could create music like that and I listened to the album over and over for weeks. It was hypnotic and became my bridge between analog and electronic music. It kind of changed my approach to music overall. Beth Gibbons voice on that album gives me the chills even today…
Es waren die späten Neunziger Jahre und jede Menge fantastischer Musik kam damals aus Großbritannien (wie immer). Ich interessierte mich zu jener Zeit für amerikanischen Post Punk und Grunge und hörte nicht dieses elektronische Zeug wie House und Techno. Ich erinnere mich, wie ich diesen Song anspielte. Es war wie eine Offenbarung und hat mir auf der Stelle neue musikalische Ideen gegeben. Ich wusste nicht, dass man derlei Musik machen konnte und hörte das Album für viele Wochen immer und immer wieder an. Es war hypnotisch und meine Brücke zwischen digitaler und analoger Musik. Es hat meinen Zugang zur Musik komplett verändert. Beth Gibbons Stimme löst bei mir immer noch Gänsehaut aus.
3) Feist – Anti Pioneer
Magnificent production on this track and album. Love the slow and dragging beat with some awesome melodies on the guitar and piano.
Wunderschön produziert, sowohl der Track als auch das ganze Album. Ich mag diesen langsamen, schleppenden Beat in Verbindung mit diesen tollen Gittaren- und Klaviermelodien.
4) Deportees – Islands & Shores (Islands Shores 2011)
Great tune! The song is kind of a long build up with great atmospheric details everywhere in the song that contrasts the monotone beat and fairly repetitive melodies. It has a good vibe that makes me wanna move it!
Großartiger Song! Er hat ein langes Build-Up sowie großartige, atmosphärische Details, die im Kontrast zum monotonen Beat und den repititven Melodien stehen. Er hat einen tollen Vibe, zu dem ich mich bewegen will.
5) The Middle East – The Darkest Side
I have a soft spot for nice acoustic fingerpicking. This tune has that and more. Vibrant vocals and harmonies. Lovely melodies and it just sets a melancholic mood. Perfect for a rainy Sunday in the autumn.
Ich mag schönes, akustisches Fingerpicking. Dieser Titel hat das – und viel mehr. Flirrenden Gesang und Harmonien. Liebliche Melodien. Er versetzt einen in eine melancholische Stimmung. Perfekt für einen regnerischen Herbsttag.
