My Soundtrack: Jon Regen

1. Billy Joel – “Movin’ Out”

As a singing, piano-playing songwriter from New York City, Billy Joel really showed me (and countless other artists like me) the way. Here was a guy that do it all – play the living hell out of the piano, write a song that you couldn’t get out of your head, and never take himself too seriously. My sister Claudia bought Billy’s album The Stranger back in 1977 and it lived on constant repeat in my house. The first track “Movin’ Out” is the one that still gives me goosebumps. We’ve all heard it countless times and know how it goes, but it still manages to surprise with every listen. This version of the song from Billy’s 1982 homecoming concert on Long Island may be my favorite – He’s on the very top of his game, and his band is just killing it!

2. The Police – „So Lonely”

The Police were ahead of their time on a myriad of different musical levels – from their genre-bending sound mixing pop, rock, jazz, Reggae and other styles, to the truly massive sonic punch they could emit as a trio. If I trace my musical development as a solo artist back to the beginning, in many ways it starts with the Police. I also think they are the reason that playing as a trio is still my preferred touring format to this day. As a singer, I would cite Sting as probably my biggest influence as far as phrasing, emotional content and lyrical guts and grace are concerned. Stewart Copeland turned the drumming world upside down with his globally-infused timekeeping and deep-pocketed groove. And Andy Summers brought a punk edge and a jazz lyricism to the band’s sound that taught me how fearless pop music could be. I actually met Andy on a concert we both played for the JVC Jazz Festival in 1997 and we remain friends to this day. He played guitar on two of my albums, 2008’s Let It Go and 2011’s Revolution. I think the song “So Lonely” is a great place to start when it comes to the Police. It’s a symphony of pop music mastery In three minutes and 12 seconds!

3. Bruce Hornsby and the Range – “The Way It Is”

Along with Billy Joel, Bruce Hornsby is another pianist, singer and songwriter who was a giant inspiration to me as well. Bruce and I actually both studied with the same piano teacher at the University of Miami in Florida, (Vince Maggio), and we both share a deep love and appreciation of jazz. I remember Bruce’s song “The Way It Is” topping the pop charts in America in the mid 1980’s. I thought to myself, “How the hell did a song with a jazz piano solo in the middle go to Number One?!” He put the acoustic piano back on the radio, and suddenly made ‘piano geeks’ like me in rock bands around the world almost as cool as guitarists! Bruce and I remain friendly to this day, and I recently interviewed him for Keyboard Magazine in the United States.

Ich erinnere mich, als Bruces Song „The Way It Is“ die amerikanischen Pop-Charts Mitte der 80er Jahre anführte.

4. Shirley Horn – “A Beautiful Friendship”

The late jazz singer and pianist Shirley Horn didn’t write the song “A Beautiful Friendship” from her 1988 album Close Enough for Love, (It was written by Donald Kahn and Stanley Styne), but she might as well have. The way she sings, swings and accompanies herself on the piano on this track shook me down to my shoes. I remember driving my car through the Holland Tunnel on my way into New York City and almost crashing it into the middle divider, I was so transported by this track. At that time, I was studying at Rutgers University with the legendary pianist Kenny Barron, thinking I would spend my life as a straight-ahead jazz instrumentalist. But hearing Shirley sing and play this song made me think I just might be able to do the same thing myself. 27 years later, I have a career as a singer and pianist. It was this singer and this song that got me started on a journey that continues to this day. So, thank you, Shirley!

Also danke, Shirley.

5. Jeff Buckley – “Last Goodbye”

Just how Nirvana changed music with their 1991 album Nevermind, I really believe Jeff Buckley did the same with his 1994 album Grace. I remember hearing the song “Last Goodbye” when it hit the radio on its release thinking, “Oh my God. Who is this?” Jeff had everything – a limitless vocal range, the ability to mix mysterious Eastern sounds with gritty, grunge rock, and a songwriting sensibility that cut right to the core. I saw him live in 1995 and to this day I haven’t seen a more transcendent performance. I loved the song “Last Goodbye” so much that I actually taught myself how to play guitar so I could rock along with it! With Jeff’s death in 1997, the world lost a true musical visionary. On my 2008 album Let it Go, I was lucky enough to work with Jeff’s drummer Matt Johnson (now touring with St. Vincent), and Jeff’s photographer Merri Cyr, who took the iconic photographs on his album Grace.
