Ende Januar erscheint mit “Lucky Ones” das nunmehr vierte Album der Sheffielder Band The Crookes. Zu hören: Eine Abkehr von der einst dominierenden Melancholie hin zu mehr Romantik. Romantisch wird’s auch in unserem Interview mit Sänger und Bassist George Waite. Der Gute hat sich Zeit für “My Soundtrack” genommen, verrät uns die fünf Songs, die in seinem Leben eine zentrale Rolle spielen – und macht dabei gleich einen Heiratsantrag.

The Beatles – Help!
I had the video of “Help!”, the film, and me and my Dad used to watch it all the time when I was a kid. At 5/6 years old , I had no idea what was going on on-screen but it didn’t matter because there was a killer song every five minutes – “Another Girl”, “Hide Your Love Away”, “Ticket To Ride”… That film – and the song in particular, with that melody and Lennon’s delivery – was the best introduction to music I could have had. An obvious first choice I suppose but oh well…
Ich besaß das Video zum Film “Help!”. Mein Vater und ich haben es uns häufig angeschaut, als ich noch ein Kind war. Als ich 5/6 Jahre alt war, hatte ich zwar keine Ahnung, was da auf der Mattscheibe vor sich ging, aber das war auch egal. ABBA – Mamma Mia
We went on a family holiday years ago and realised when we got there that we only had one CD – “Abba Gold”. So for two weeks we listened exclusively to that and by the end I thought they were the greatest band ever. Very, very few people can touch them for melodies – they have more choruses in one song than most bands have in a career. Whenever we DJ this song always gets played and we all get up and dance like absolute mad men.
Vor ein paar Jahren fuhren wir mit der Familie in die Ferien. Unterwegs merkten wir, dass wir nur eine CD mit hatten – “ABBA Gold”. Also hörten wir uns das Teil zwei Wochen lang exklusiv an – und am Ende dachte ich, das ist die größte Band aller Zeiten. Nur wenige können ihnen in Sachen Melodien das Wasser reichen – sie haben mehr Chorusse in einem Song als andere in ihrer ganzen Karriere. Immer wenn wir den DJ geben, wird dieser Song gespielt. Dann springen wir alle auf und tanzen wie die Verrückten.
Rilo Kiley – The Absence Of God
I saw Rilo Kiley support Bright Eyes at the Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms in 2005 having never heard of then and they instantly became my favourite band. They’re still up there now. When you’re 17, it feels so important to discover things for yourself and RK were the first band I felt were mine. Nobody else had heard of them, they weren’t on the radio or in magazines so it felt like I had stumbled on to a hidden gem which made them all the more special. This song in particular has a great lyric and one of the sweetest melodies you’ll hear – “I say there’s trouble when everything is fine. The need to destroy things creeps up on me every time…” Plus, I want to marry Jenny Lewis.
Ich sah Rilo Kiley, als sie 2005 Bright Eyes in den Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms supporteten. Ich kannte sie vorher nicht, aber sie wurden sofort zu meiner Lieblingsband. Sie sind für mich immer noch da oben. Wenn du 17 bist, ist es einfach wahnsinnig wichtig, Dinge für sich selbst zu entdecken und RK waren die erste Band, die mir gehörte. Niemand sonst kannte sie, sie wurden nicht im Radio gespielt oder waren in Magazinen zu finden. Es fühlte sich also an, als wäre ich über ein Juwel gestolpert, was das Ganze noch spezieller machte. Vor allem dieser Song hat einen großartigen Text und eine der süßesten Melodien überhaupt – “I say there’s trouble when everything is fine. The need to destroy things creeps up on me every time …” Außerdem möchte ich Jenny Lewis heiraten.
Nude Beach – Radio
NB are a garage pop punk trio from New Jersey that I found out about when we were in New York on tour about two years ago. I saw an advert for their show at the Mercury Lounge and went across town on my own to watch them. That was one of those moments – running through downtown Manhattan, dodging taxis and pretzel carts to catch a band whilst on a US tour of my own – where I really had to pinch myself. This song always reminds me of that.
NB sind ein Garage-Pop-Punk-Trip aus New Jersey, von dem ich erfuhr, als wir vor etwa zwei Jahren auf Tour in New York waren. Ich sah eine Reklame für ihr Konzert in der Mercury Lounge und bin durch die ganze Stadt gefahren, um sie spielen zu sehen. Es war einer dieser Momente – ich rannte durch Downtown Manhattan, wich Taxis und Bretzel-Ständen aus, um diese Band zu erwischen, während ich auf Tour mit meiner eigenen war. Ich musste mich echt kneifen. Dieser Song erinnert mich immer wieder daran.
Bruce Springsteen – Dancing in the Dark
We all love Bruce Springsteen. For me, that stems from when we built our first practice room in the cellar of our shared house 6 years ago. It was damp and dark and full of rubbish but we turned it into a place we could write and rehearse what would turn out to be our first record. We pretty much listened to Darkness on the Edge of Town and Born to Run for two weeks straight doing that. This is another that we have been know to dance like crazed lunatics to at 3am in the morning.
Wir alle lieben Bruce Springsteen. Ich denke, das stammt aus jener Zeit vor sechs Jahren, als wir unseren ersten Übungskeller in dem Haus, das wir uns teilten, einrichteten. Ein düsterer Ort, voller Müll, aber wir verwandelten ihn in einen Ort, an dem wir das Material schreiben und proben konnten, das sich schließlich als unsere erste Platte entpuppte. Wir hörten damals zwei Wochen lang am Stück “Darkness On The Edge Of Town” und “Born To Run”. Dazu können wir morgens um drei Uhr immer noch wie die Bekloppten tanzen.
