Indie-Rock und Club-Mukke – das sind die zwei großen Einflüsse des australischen Elektro-Trios Crooked Colours. Die Jungs aus Perth hatten 2013 die australische Musikszene im Sturm erobert, mit den Singles “Come Down”, “Capricious” und “Another Way” über die Jahre eine große Erwartungshaltung aufgebaut. Trotzdem ließen sich Philip Slabber, Leon Debaughn und Liam Merrett-Park mit dem Debütalbum Zeit. Nach einer 18-monatigen Pause haben Crooked Colours erst Anfang September ihr lang erwartetes Debütalbum „Vera“ veröffentlicht. Jetzt hat uns die Band für unsere “My Soundtrack”-Reihe Rede und Antwort gestanden.

Hot Chip – Look At Where We Are
One of the first songs that really introduced me to the indie music. The song writing is beautiful and fragile and reached me at a time when I could really take a lot of meaning from it and the production is warm but powerful. We’ve been massive Hot Chip fans for years and this song is a prime example of how good they are at their craft.
Eine der ersten Songs, der mir wirklich Indie Music näher brachte. Das Songwriting ist schön und zerbrechlich, er erreichte mich in einer Zeit, in der ich ihm viel Bedeutung beimessen konnte. Die Produktion ist warm und kraftvoll. Wir waren jahrelang massive Hot-Chip-Fans, und dieser Song ist ein Paradebeispiel dafür, wie gut die Jungs ihr Handwerk verstanden haben.
Caribou – Can’t Do Without You
We were listening to this track a lot when we first started writing our album. I think why this song is so special to me is because of the structure and simplicity. The subtle changes that happen throughout the track that you don’t always notice. It taught us a lot about building tension in a song and how to effectively get away from standard song structures. When it opens up at the 1:30 mark and the end hook are both special moments.
Wir haben die Nummer oft gehört, als wir gerade an unserem ersten Album arbeiteten. Ich denke, der Song ist für mich vor allem wegen seiner Struktur und Einfachheit so besonders. Diese ganzen subtilen Veränderungen im ganzen Track, die man nicht immer mitbekommt. Er lehrte uns viel über Spannungsaufbau in einem Song und wie man sich effektiv von Standard-Song-Strukturen entfernen kann. Die Öffnung ab Minute 1:30 und auch der Hook am Ende – beides besondere Momente.
Ry X – Howling
Ry Cuming has a few different projects and they are all amazing, but this is still my favourite track of his. It just captures such a unique vibe and there’s few times when I can’t listen to this track. It’s just a chilled calming song and his voice is incredible.
Ry Cuming hat verschiedene Projekte am Start und sie sind alle wundervoll, aber dieses hier ist immer noch mein Lieblingslied. Es hat einfach einen einzigartigen Vibe und es gibt nur wenige Momente, in denen ich es nicht hören könnte. Ein chilliger, beruhigender Song. Und seine Stimme ist unglaublich.
Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – Tapes & Money
We got into this song when we first started dj’ing around Perth and we always spun it. We saw him perform live at Southbound festival one year and it really changed my perspective on what a live electro act can be. It’s just a banger and is such a good rev-up track. This whole album is amazing and got me really paying attention to electronic dance music.
Wir haben den Song kennengelernt, als wir gerade im Raum Perth den DJ gegeben haben. Wir haben die Nummer oft gespielt. Wir sahen ihn auch live beim Southbound Festival performen und das hat wirklich meine Sicht auf Live-Electro verändert. Es ist ein richtiger Banger und ein wirklich guter Rev-Up-Track. Das ganze Album ist wundervoll. Seither bin ich bei elektronischer Dance-Musik aufmerksam.
Crystal Castles – Vanished
We kind of owe the formation of our band to Crystal Castles. Me and Leon started talking one night at a bar and it was the mutual love of Crystal Castles that got us writing music together. “Vanished” was one of our favourite tracks at the time and we used to perform a cover of it in our live sets. We still love Crystal Castles and actually got to support them on the Australian leg of their tour this year.
Wir schulden die Existenz unserer Band ein wenig Crystal Castles. Ich und Leon trafen uns eines Nachts an einer Bar und es war unsere gemeinsame Liebe für Crystal Castles, die uns dazu brachte, gemeinsam Musik zu machen. “Vanished” war einer unserer Lieblingstracks zu jener Zeit und wir coverten sie oft in unseren Live-Sets. Wir lieben Crystal Castles immer noch und durften sie auch bei ihrer Australien-Tour supporten.
