Nur fünf Tracks zu nennen, die das eigene Leben am meisten bereichert haben, das ist für Musik-Liebhaber eine schwierige Aufgabe. Fand auch die kanadische Sängerin Alannah Myles („Black Velvet“), bei der wir kürzlich für diese Rubrik angefragt haben. „Favourite Songs that influenced my recorded music? There have been far too many influences. There is no way to select only 5! My hope is that you will include them all in your interview“, antwortete Myles (jüngstes Album: „85 BPM“, 2014) und schickte kurzerhand 18 (!) Tracks. Und weil wir ja nicht so sind, gibt es die nun hier:

1) Ann Peebles – I Can’t Stand The Rain
I covered her 1974 classic recorded by Tina Turner in the 80s. I loved the loose, swing blues style of one of my favourite bands, Little Feat. Written by Ann Peebles, whose unique blues vocals and her original version inspired me as a young blues vocalist. This is my version.
Ich habe ihren 1974er-Klassiker gecovert, der ja in den 80ern nochmal von Tina Turner aufgenommen wurde. Ich mochte allerdings auch diese swingende, bluesige Version des Songs von einer meiner liebsten Bands, Little Feat. Geschrieben wurde er allerdings wie gesagt von Ann Peebles – und ihr einzigartiger Blues-Gesang, ihre Originalversion haben mich als junge Blues-Sängerin beeinflusst. Das hier ist meine Version.

3) Steve Winwood – Can’t Find My Way Home
His guitar picking and haunting celtic melody! This was a song I played in the very early beginnings of my live performances as a young girl before I began playing rock songs with a band.
Sein Gitarrenspiel und seine heimsuchenden, keltischen Melodien! Dies war ein Song, den ich zu Beginn meiner Karriere bei meinen ersten Live-Konzerten gerne spielte, als junges Mädchen, bevor ich begann, Rock-Songs mit einer Band zu spielen.
4) Elton John – Where To Now St. Peter
The movement and melodic changes in the verse of this strongly influenced me on songs such as „Who Loves You“ from my first album.

5) Linda Ronstadt – Love Me Tender
Linda’s voice was what I aspired to be as a vocalist. She chose the best songs L.A. had to offer and I learned how it was done from the master.
Lindas Stimme hätte ich als Sängerin immer gerne gehabt. Sie hat sich die besten Songs ausgesucht, die L.A. zu bieten hatte – und ich habe von der Meisterin gelernt, wie man es macht.
6) Linda Ronstadt – Carmelita
Written by Warren Zevon, recorded by one of my favourite female vocalists: Linda Ronstadt. Warren’s song and Linda’s voice were a great influence on my songwriting. I was fired at a Holiday Inn in Peterborough, Ontario Canada in the early 80s for performing an acoustic version of this song when a patron of their lounge bar requested that I „play something nice !“

7) Jennifer Warnes & Leonard Cohen – Famous Blue Raincoat (Alternativer Link)
This song had a profound affect on my emotions. I would cry (and still do) every time I listen to it. Her vocals and especially Leonard Cohen’s songwriting were the backbone of my artistry. I aspired to reach this depth of emotion and sprinkled it throughout „Lover Of Mine“, „Who Loves You“, „Black Velvet“ and a more recent song on my „85 BPM“ album „Faces In The Crowd„. I get goosebumps just listening.
Dieser Song hat eine tiefgehende Wirkung auf meine Gefühlswelt. Ich weine immer (auch heute noch), wenn ich ihn höre. Ihr Gesang und vor allem Leonards Songwriting sind das Rückgrat meiner Kunst. Ich wollte immer eine ähnliche emotionale Tiefe in meinen Songs erreichen und habe damit „Lover Of Mine“, „Who Loves You“, „Black Velvet“ und „Faces In The Crowd“, aus meinem aktuellen „85 BPM“-Album, berieselt. Bekomme immer noch Gänsehaut, wenn ich den Track höre.
8) INXS – Need You Tonight (Studio-Version)
Though I had decidedly made a louder rock record on my debut release, the entire INXS album had an enormous influence on my first recorded album which included „Love Is“.
Obwohl ich mich am Ende dazu entschloss, eine laute Rock-Platte als mein Debüt zu veröffentlichen, hatte dieses INXS-Album („Kick“) einen enormen Einfluss auf mein erstes Album, das damals „Love Is“ beinhaltete.
9) Elvis Presley – Jailhouse Rock
You can hear the direct similarities of Elvis‘ „Jailhouse Rock“ in „Rock This Joint“ from my debut album. I sang the song in one pass the first time we recording the demo which is wy the lyrics are wrong. I taped the lyric to the mic stand but improvisation kicked in and we used it for the final recording.
Man kann Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen Elvis‘ „Jailhouse Rock“ und „Rock This Joint“ von meinem Debütalbum hören. Ich habe den Song in einem Durchlauf gesungen, als wir das Demo aufnahmen, weshalb der Text auch falsch ist. Ich hatte die Lyrics zwar an meinem Mikroständer befestigt, dann aber doch improvisiert – und wir haben es dann für die finale Aufnahme verwendet.
10) AC/DC – Highway to Hell
This was my idea of what a great rock song and vocal should sound like when I chose to rewrite the lyric of „Kick Start My Heart“ to include on my first album. It was free and silly and reckless.
Das entsprach meiner Vorstellung davon, wie ein großartiger Rock-Song klingen sollte. Und das hatte ich im Kopf, als ich den Text zu „Kick Start My Heart“ umschrieb für mein erstes Album. Er war frei, silly und rücksichtslos.
11) Joni Mitchell – Blue
This album was all I listened to living in L.A. between the success of my first album and my second, Rockinghorse. I even met Joni in a local restaurant in Santa Monica as she was raising a spoonful of pea soup to her mouth when I interrupted her to tell her (nervously) that I’d used a line in Blue as my inspiration when writing and recording „Song Instead Of A Kiss“. I’m still amazed she knew who I was.
Ich hörte ausschließlich dieses Album, als ich in L.A. lebte, zwischen dem Erfolg meines ersten Albums und dem zweiten, „Rockinghorse“. Ich traf Joni sogar in einem Restaurant in Santa Monica. Sie führte gerade einen Löffel Erbsensuppe zum Mund, als ich sie (nervös) unterbrach und ihr mitteilte, dass eine Sonzeile aus „Blue“ mir als Inspiration diente, als ich „Song Instead Of A Kiss“ schrieb und aufnahm. Ich bin immer noch verblüfft, dass sie wusste, wer ich war.
12) ZZ Top – I Thank You
This style of rock was my inspiration when I had to fight with my producer to convince him to record „Still Got This Thing For You“ for my debut album. He thought the song was „too retro“. I’m glad I changed his mind.
Dieser Rock-Style war meine Inspiration, als ich mich mit meinem Produzenten stritt, um ihn davon zu überzeugen, „Still Got This Thing“ für mein Debütalbum aufzunehmen. Er fand den Song „zu retro“. Ich bin froh, dass er sich umentschied.
13) The Rolling Stones – Sympathy For The Devil
The Rolling Stones were an enormous influence on my music. You can hear it in my early music and especially in songs like „Mistress Of Erzulie“.
Die Rolling Stones hatten einen enormen Einfluss auf meine Musik. Das kann man vor allem in meinen früheren Arbeiten hören, gerade in Songs wie „Mistress of Erzulie„.
14) CSNY – Teach Your Children Well
Crosby Stills Nash & Young were my favourite one album band. You can hear their early country style of folk sprinkled throughout all of my records. It was this style of country music that I believed was what real country should sound like.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young waren meine liebste One-Album-Band. Ihren frühen Country-Folk kann man hier und da auf all meinen Werken hören. Ihr Country-Stil ist für mich die Blaupause, wie Country klingen sollte.
