My Soundtrack: Nicki Bluhm

1. The Kinks – Waterloo Sunset
I first heard this song on the radio when I was 22 years old living in San Diego. I wasn’t familiar with The Kinks at the time but hearing this song got me hooked. I love the thoughtful arrangement of the song and the sunny angle despite the sad undertones. You can almost see the sun going down when you listen.

2. The Band – Makes No Difference
There are certain songs that I always seem to return to for comfort and this is one of them. It touches on one of the most common and simple human emotions, suffering. Some songs make you feel happy, others bold and empowered, but this one is like a long, warm comforting hug and the best part is it’s there for you at any moment. Sonically the harmonies kill me. I’m a major sucker for male harmony singing.

3. Joni Mitchell – California
When I was 19 I was studying marine science abroad in South Caicos. My bunk mate played a lot of Joni Mitchell and I remember this song coming on and feeling an immediate connection to it. The connection wasn’t just because I was homesick for my home state, rather that a native Canadian had such an affinity for it. There is an ease in California, a way about it and I think this song honors that specialness.

4. Jason Isbell – If it Takes a Life Time
I think this song is perfect. From the arrangement, to the licks, to the lyrics. It hit me hard the first time I heard it and even more so the many times following. Jason is an incredible songwriter and I am so grateful to have someone like him making modern music in such a tasteful way. He speaks so honestly and is able to make the present times (despite the take over of technology, crazy politics and environmental demise) seem idyllic.

5. Whitney Houston – How Will I Know
I used to call Whitney Houston my „guilty pleasure“ but I realize I don’t feel guilty at all! Her voice is one of the very best and I spent a lot of time listening to her as a young girl. I used to sing this song in the shower all the time. It was relevant then as a 6 year old and it still is now. I guess I’ll always have a love for 80’s pop music.
