My Soundtrack: Nive Nielsen

Moondog – Lament 1 (bird’s lament).

Moondog is super cool. And funny! His music’s been part of me for a long time now – his compositions are so inspiring, in how his rhythms are jumping all around yet make total sense, and the melodies are light and playful but played seriously and intently, almost like bombastic playfulness. I loooove these melodies!!

Bombastische Verspieltheit. Ich liebe diese Melodien!!

Giant Sand – Stranded pearl (from the album proVisions).

So…I love when things are playful! Howe Gelb always seems to be having fun with words, and he makes me smile. In this song he sings with Isobel Campbell and they tell a story. It’s a cowboy that could be somewhere in the past because of some of his word choices (something about a gingham hiked high) but he has a car and he is in love. Haha and the percussion bit they do with their breath is pretty inventive and cool. Howe Gelb always inspires to have fun with words and stories, and he also thought me to just do things. Happy accidents and all.

Also…

Abner Jay – I’m so depressed (from the album One Man Band).

This song is absolutely great. Abner Jay’s expression is amazing. I am not so interested in any kind of singing techniques but I am fascinated by how we hear emotions in other humans through their voice. Our brains are wired to understand expression, it’s a survival mechanism, we can hear anger and irritation and even tell them apart, we can hear a smile in somebody’s voice. In Abner Jay’s singing I hear a lot of sincerity, like he feels every song he sings and I believe him even if he has song that same song a 100 times. He is a huge inspiration to always remember why you wrote a song. Plus: it’s a one-man band! The exact opposite of what I am trying to do hehe – but seriously, a one-man band! Awesome J.

Awesome J.

Wilmoth Houdini – Don’t do that to me (from the album Shango, Shouter & Obeah)

This song is fun, cool and full of contrast. He sings about rather serious issues but he will sing it in a sort of party song. I can see him quickly laughing about his troubles, and that is pretty cool because I admire people who can call a spade for a spade and face their troubles head on, always prepared to have fun, because life is short. Hhhmmm I don’t know of this is true to Wilmoth Houdini at all, in actuality I don’t know anything about him, but I love this song and it inspires me in an imagined life lesson kind of way.

Arthur Russell – Another Thought (from the album Another Thought).

Arthur Russell is another musician who’s been part of me for a long time – especially this album here. There is something very direct and immediate about the way he sings and plays the cello. It seems very effortless, beautiful and a bit loopy. Nothings feels over laboured. But a lot lot lot of work went into making things sound so effortlessly simple and natural. Arthur Russell is inspiring that simple is beautiful sometimes. It’s music that makes time stop. And I just love it.

Musik lässt Zeit still stehen. Und das liebe ich.
